To add to your spooky Halloween decorations, I’ve also created this Free Halloween Eyeball Coasters Pattern which uses the same Spiked Single Crochet technique I have used for these amigurumi eyeballs to achieve the realistic-looking two-toned iris effect.

Creepy Halloween Crochet Eyeballs

These amigurumi eyeballs can be made with any yarn weight or type. Your choice of yarn and hook size will determine the finished size of your eyeballs. Here, I have used DK/Light Worsted weight acrylic yarn and a 3mm hook to produce some eyeballs measuring approximately 3.5cm / 1.3″ in diameter:

You can also add a keyring attachment to make this into keyrings or bag charms! These would be great as classroom gifts or party favours after Halloween parties. Here I have used cotton yarn in Aran/Worsted weight and a 4mm hook to make them a little sturdier. These measure approximately 4.8 cm / 1.9″ in diameter:

By using Chunky/Bulky weight acrylic yarn and a 4.5mm hook, you can create these fun, squishy, palm-sized eyeballs! These measure approximately 5.5 / 2.2″ in diameter:

Crochet Halloween Eyeball Decorations

I have stuck to more traditional colours for my eyeball iris colours, 2 shades of blue for blue eyes, 2 shades of brown for brown eyes, 2 shades of green for green eyes, and brown and green for hazel eyes. But you can use any 2 colours you like.

Here, I have hung my eyeballs up with some cotton thread to create a fun Halloween display. If you give the hanging threads a twist to start them off, the eyeballs will keep on spinning on their own! I’m not sure which I prefer, grouped together as one dangly display or spread out individually across my window. How will you hang yours?

You can keep the whites plain or make them extra creepy-looking by adding veins. The instructions are included but the choice is yours!

What You’ll Need To Crochet Creepy Eyeballs

I have created a mix of different-sized eyeballs using Paintbox Yarns Simply DK, Rico Creative Cotton, and Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky yarns. You can use any yarn weight or type you prefer, or use a mix like I have. Just keep to the same yarn weight in all the colours for each eyeball.

You will need approximately 30 yds of White yarn and less than 2 yds of Black yarn, and your chosen Inner Iris colour, and Outer Iris colour. If you would like to add veins to your eyeball, you’ll also need a small amount of Red or Dark Pink yarn or embroidery thread.

Use a crochet hook 1 to 2 sizes smaller than recommended for your chosen yarn weight. Exact gauge isn’t important for this pattern, you just want to keep your stitches compact enough to hold the stuffing without it showing through.

You will also need some Toy Stuffing (Polyester Fiberfill), a Stitch Marker, a Yarn Needle and Scissors.

Depending on how you want to use your crocheted eyeballs, you may need some thread or string to make hanging decorations or keyring attachments to make keyrings or bag charms.

(mr) Magic Ring, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (inc) Increase – 2 sc in the same st, (dec) Decrease (Invisible)- hook through the front loops only of the following 2 stitches and make a sc, (BLO) Back Loop Only, (SPsc) Spiked Single Crochet – explained in the pattern notes section below.

Crochet Halloween Eyeball Pattern Notes

Joining Colours for the Iris:

For our Iris colours, we will join yarn with a sc – Start with a slip knot on hook, insert hook into the joining stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both loops on hook to complete the sc joining stitch. This counts as the first sc stitch of the round.

Free Halloween Eyeballs Crochet Pattern - Joining with a sc

Scatter your joining start points for each round to blend in the joins.

Working Spiked Single Crochet Stitches (SPsc):

(SPsc) Spiked Single Crochet Stitch – These are worked just like a normal single crochet stitch, only you’ll be inserting your hook into stitches below the previous row. For this pattern, I have indicated that you insert your hook into the base of the increase stitch (which would be the same stitch you had worked the increases into, below the previous round). When you pull up a loop for your SPsc stitch, allow enough slack to bring the stitch up to the current round’s level.

Working in Back loops Only (BLO):

We will be using a technique of working into Back Loops Only (BLO) around the iris to give us a nice crisp circle around the eye colour. This will be explained in detail within the pattern.

How to Crochet An Amigurumi Eyeball

We will be starting with the Black Pupil, then work the 2 colours of the Iris, and then finish the rest of the eyeball in White.

Using Black yarn, start with a magic ring,

R1.

sc x6 into mr, pull closed, sl st into the first sc to join, cut yarn and pull through the loop on hook to fasten off Black (6)

R2.

Using your chosen Inner Iris colour, join with a sc into any st, inc in each remaining st, sc into the same st as joining again, sl st into the first sc to join, fasten off your Inner Iris colour (12 – aka 6 lots of increase stitches)

R3.

Using your chosen Outer Iris colour, join with a sc into the 1st sc of any increase, insert hook into the base of that increase stitch and make a SPsc, sc into the 2nd sc of that increase stitch, *sc into the 1st sc of the next increase, SPsc into the base of that increase, sc into the 2nd sc of that increase,* repeat between * to the end of round, sl st into the first sc to join, fasten off your Outer Iris colour (18)

R4.

Using White yarn, make a slip knot and remove it from your hook. Starting at any stitch, insert your hook through the BLO and pull the slip knot loop through to join your yarn, sl st in the BLO of each stitch, sl st into the same BLO that you started with to finish the round (18)

We will be working in continuous rounds from here, so keep track of your first stitch with a stitch marker.

R5.

We will work this round going through the BLO of both the White slip stitches and the Outer Iris stitches below. Simply insert your hook directly through the middle of the V of the White slip stitches and you will find that you will come through under the Outer Iris back loops and the back bar of the White stitches as well.
*inc, sc x2,* repeat between * to the end of round (24)

Cut yarn leaving a few inches of tail end, Use your yarn needle to weave your tail end through the Front Loops Only of the last 6 stitches and pull closed, weave in the end to secure and trim off the excess.

Tip: If you find you have a few visible gaps, use the tail end to weave through and cover the holes.

Adding Optional Veins to your Crochet Eyeball (Bloodshot Eyes)

If you would like your eyeball to look extra creepy for Halloween, you can add some veins to the eye. Take a long length of Red or Dark Pink yarn and split the plies of the yarn to get thin strands. Or you can just use thinner yarn or embroidery floss instead.

Step 1.

Using your yarn needle, feed the single strand through the side of the eyeball, coming out at the middle of the back of the eyeball.

Step 2.

Embroider 6 long, evenly spaced, stitches coming out from the middle, making them between 3-5 rounds long randomly.

Step 3.

Embroider V shapes at the end of each of the 6 stitches, between 1-2 rounds long.
Note: As your length of yarn gets too short, feed it through the eyeball and out the side to secure and trim off the excess. Then take another strand and feed through the eyeball again to secure before continuing.

Step 4.

Embroider 1 or 2 lines randomly from the tips of the V shapes, between 1-3 rounds long, going up to the 2nd or 3rd round out from the Iris. Once you’ve finished, feed the yarn through the eyeball to secure and trim off the excess.
