Aviva Summer Top Free Crochet Pattern

Sharing is caring!

Crochet yourself a gorgeous casual tee with this free summer top crochet pattern! It is made up of 2 identical panels with minimal shaping, making it a super easy summer crochet project.

The top features a solid textured body with a mesh top section. You can wear the top with the hem hanging out straight, or tuck it in, to suit your own style.

I have used 100% cotton DK weight yarn, for a cooler Spring/Summer tee. You could use wool or acrylic for a warmer, layering, top for the colder months.

It is worked with a larger 6mm hook size for looser stitches, to add drape to the fabric.

What you’ll need to crochet your summer top

You’ll need DK weight Cotton yarn (US Light Worsted) – approximately 1000yds for size Small, 1100yds for Medium, 1200yds for Large, 1300yds for Xlarge, 1400yds for 2XL, 1500yds for 3XL. Check the Size Chart below for your required size.

I have used Drops Muskat 100% mercerized cotton in Denim Blue. Similar alternatives include Rico Essentials Cotton DK or Patons 100% Cotton DK.

You’ll also need a 6mm crochet hook or size needed for gauge, a yarn needle, scissors, a tape measure, and 2 stitch markers.

Gauge: 2″ (5cm) square = 9 sc+ch1 x 11 rows.
I have used DK weight yarn with a 6mm crochet hook.

Sizing for the Aviva Crochet T-Shirt:

Aviva Mesh Top Tee Crochet Pattern Texture Close Up

This top is made using a combination of Moss Stitches (sc+ch1), and Offset Mesh Stitches (dc+ch1). It is designed to be oversized so that the shoulders overhang (approx. +5″ to bust measurements).

Your starting chain will measure longer. The width of your body pieces will contract a little from the second row, due to the stitch pattern, giving a slight flare to the hem. Your stitch count should remain consistent throughout the top.

Use the chart below to choose your size. The pattern will be following the small size as standard with changes to instructions for the other sizes shown colour coded to make it easier to follow your size.

Crochet Stitches & Terms Used For The Aviva Top:

This pattern is written using US crochet terms. Please refer to my Crochet Terms Conversion Chart for help with translating into UK terms.

The pattern is beginner friendly, and uses the following basic stitches:
(ch) Chain, (sk) Skip, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (hdc) Half Double Crochet, (dc) Double Crochet.

To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x. For example, {sc, inc,} would mean sc into next st, increase (2sc) in following st. Or {sc x3, inc,} would mean sc into each of the next 3 stitches, increase in the following st.

Crochet Summer Top For Beginners

This easy to make summer top is made up of 2 identical rectangular panels with slight neck shaping. We will finish by adding the sleeve trims after seaming the panels together.

Make 2 panels as follows:

Main body:

Start by chaining (91/101/109/119/127/137)

R1.

For a neater finish, work along the back bumps of the chain stitches.
sc in 2nd ch from hook (skipped ch does not count as a stitch), sc in each remaining ch, turn (90/100/108/118/126/136)

R2.

ch2 (counts as the first ch1 sp), skip the first st, sc, *ch1, sk1, sc*, repeat between * to the end of row, turn (90/100/108/118/126/136 – half of the stitches will be sc stitches, the other half will be ch1 spaces)

R3.

ch2 (counts as the first ch1 sp), sk the first sc st, sc into the ch1 sp, *ch1, sk1, sc into the ch1 sp*, repeat between * to the end of row, turn (90/100/108/118/126/136)

R4.- R88./R90./R90./R92./R92./R94.

Repeat R3. for another 85/87/87/89/89/91 rows (90/100/108/118/126/136)

Top Tip: Place a stitch marker at the end of every 10th row to help keep track.

ch3 (counts as the first ch1 sp), sk the first st, dc into the ch1 sp,
[ch1, sk1, dc into the ch1 sp] x7/9/11/13/15/17,
[ch1, sk1, hdc into the ch1 sp] x2 (all sizes),

R3.

Repeat R2. once more (90/100/108/118/126/136)

R4.

ch2 (counts as the first ch1 sp), sk the first st, sc into the ch1 sp, *ch1, sk1, sc into the ch1 sp*, repeat between * another 8/10/12/14/16/18 times, sl st  x51/53/53/55/55/57 working into each of the sc sts and ch1 sps finishing in a sc st, sc into the following ch sp, repeat between * again for another 9/11/13/15/17/19 times to the end of row, cut yarn leaving a long tail for seaming the shoulder (approx. the length of the entire width) and pull it up through the last loop to fasten off. (90/100/108/118/126/136)

To clarify, you should have 10/12/14/16/18/20 sets of sc & ch1 stitches on either side, with continuous slip stitches along the middle.

This row will be the Wrong Side of the panels, look for the Vs of the slip stitches to tell which is the Right and Wrong side when joining.

Joining the panels:

Shoulder seams:
Place the 2 panels, one on top of the other, with the Right Sides together. You should have one yarn tail on either side. Use the tail ends to sew the panels together at the shoulders, working a running stitch along the stitch tops of the last rows. Seam from the outer edge towards the middle, stopping at where the slip stitches start, and then reinforce the seam back out towards the edge. Secure and weave in ends.

Side seams:
Measure, from the top of the shoulder, 8/8.5/9/9.5/10/10.5 inches down one side of the panels, and mark with a stitch marker. Follow this row across to the other side and place another stitch marker. Taking a long length of yarn (approx. 3x times the height of the required join), start from the bottom hem, seam together using a running stitch up until you reach the marker, then back down to the hem. Secure and weave in ends.

Sleeve trims:

Turn your joined panels inside out so that the Right Side now shows on the outside. We’ll be joining the sleeve trim onto the Right Side, and turn to work back and forth along the trim. When working along the edges of the panels, treat every sc+ch1 row as 1 stitch, and every dc+ch1 row as 2 stitches.

Repeat the following for both armholes:

Join your yarn with a slip stitch to the seam at base of the armhole,

R1.

ch2, skip 1 row, sc into the edge of the next row, continue {ch1, sk1, sc} evenly until you reach the base of the armhole on the other side, finish with a sl st after the last ch1 st, turn (The exact number of stitches will depend on your size and personal gauge. Just make a note of your starting row stitch count to make sure they match up on the other sleeve – As a guide, my size Small has a starting stitch count of 75 excluding the initial joining sl st)

R2.

ch2, skip the first 3 sts (the sl st, ch1, and first sc st), sc into the following ch1 sp, *ch1, sk1, sc into the ch1 sp* repeat between * up to the last sc st of the previous row, ch1, skip the sc st, and finish with a sl st into the last ch2 sp, turn (Your stitch count should be your starting count -2)

R3.-R4.

Repeat R2. for 2 more rows. (Stitch count = -2 sts per row) The edges of the trim will taper inwards creating a gentle slope.

R5.

ch2, skip the first 3 sts, sc into the following ch1 sp, *ch1, sk1, sc into the ch1 sp* repeat between * up to the last sc st of the previous row, continue working {ch1, sk1, sc} evenly down the sloped edge of the trim, across the seam and up the other sloped edge, remove the loop from your hook, insert the hook though from the back to front of the first sc st of this row, replace the loop on hook and pull through to join into a round, turn

R6.

sl st into each sc st and ch1 sp all the way around, finishing in the same place as the first sl st, cut yarn, pull the tail up through the last stitch to fasten, secure and weave in ends.
