Free Mandala Coasters Crochet Pattern

Sharing is caring!

Make good use of your yarn scraps with these Happy Scrappy Mandala Crochet Coasters!

The carefree happy effect of this mandala style coaster works best with random mixes of colours, which is why it’s perfect for leftover scraps of yarn.

I have used Aran/Worsted weight cotton yarn for my coasters, but you can use up your acrylic scraps too. They may not be as absorbent, but will still prevent mugs from leaving heat rings on your tables.

The finished coasters measure approximately 10cm/ 4” in diameter.

This super easy coaster pattern is so versatile, you can achieve different styles by simply changing the colours of your coasters!

What You’ll Need To Crochet Mandala Coasters

You will need some aran/worsted weight yarn for these coasters. You can decide whether you want to use mixed colourful scraps, coordinated colours, or just one single colour.

Each coaster uses less than 15yds/10g of yarn to make. To help you check if your scrap pieces of yarn are long enough, I have measured the yarn used for each round.

  • Round 1. 50”/127cm/1.39yds (less than 1g)
  • Round 2. 90”/228cm/2.5yds (less than 2g)
  • Round 3. 164”/416cm/4.56yds (less than 3g)
  • Round 4. 234”/595cm/6.5yds (less than 4g)

I have used my leftover scraps of Drops Paris, Rico Creative Cotton, and Paintbox Yarn Cotton Aran yarns. You can use any aran or worsted weight yarn you have available.

Exact gauge is not too important. Just try to keep your stitches fairly tight, to help give structure to the coasters. I have used a 4.5mm hook.

You will also need a yarn needle and scissors.

The finished coasters should measure approximately 10cm/4” in diameter.

Stitches & Terms Used For The Mandala Coasters:

(ch) Chain, (sp) Space, (sk) Skip, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (dc) Double Crochet.

A number shown before a stitch, means work that number of stitches in the same next stitch or space (eg. 2dc = work 2 double crochets into the same stitch/space).

Instructions within [ ] are to be worked into the same stitch/space.

Number within ( ) show the total number of stitches you should have after that row/round.

Tip: As we will be working dc stitches, we will start each round with a ch3 as the first stitch. To help blend in these ch3s with the normal dc stitches, weave your ends down through the ch3 when fastening off. This will thicken the chains, making them look more like the stitches. Or you can replace the ch3s with your preferred method of alternative starting dc stitch.

Fun & Easy Scrap Yarn Coasters

For happy scrappy mandala style coasters, change yarn colours for each round, mixing your colours randomly for each coaster.

For dainty flower style coasters, start with a yellow or light colour, and use 3 gradients of your chosen flower colour, working from light to dark.

For pretty lacy style coasters, instead of fastening off at the end of each round, simply sl st into the next chain space to work the next round.

R1.

Start by chaining 4 and sl st into the first ch to form a small circle,
ch4 (counts as the first dc + ch1), [dc, ch1] 8 times into the circle, sl st into the 3rd ch of the starting ch4 to join, fasten off and weave in ends.
(18 = 9 dc sts and 9 ch1 sps)
