To make these pumpkin Pots,
You’ll Need the Following:

You can use any yarn size for these pumpkins, or even double up strands to make them larger. Just use a suitable hook size for your yarn, so that your stitches are compact enough not to let the stuffing show through. Exact gauge is not important for this project, just try to keep your stitches compact and consistent.

I have used Chunky/Bulky weight acrylic yarn with a 6mm hook. My pot measures approximately 15cm/ 6” in diameter to the widest point and has an internal pot measurement of 7.5cm/3” wide by 6cm/ 2.5” deep. An ideal size to hold a large handful of individually wrapped sweets.

For my pumpkin pot, I used approximately 70g/105yds of Orange and 5g/8yds of Green Chunky/Bulky weight yarn. You can use any weight yarn to adjust the finished size and just use this as a guide. You can, of course, make your pumpkins any colour you like.

I have used a 6mm crochet hook for my Chunky weight yarn, adjust the hook size to suit for your chosen yarn.  You will also need a yarn needle, scissors, a stitch marker, and some toy stuffing (polyester fibrefill).

Free Crochet Pumpkin Pattern For Treat Pots

This free crochet pumpkin pots pattern uses the following US stitches and terms:
(mr) Magic Ring, (ch) Chain, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (hdc) Half Double Crochet,
(inc) Increase – 2 sc in the same stitch,
(dec) Decrease (invisible) – insert the hook into the front loop only of the next 2 stitches and work a single crochet (yarn over and pull up a loop through both front loop stitches (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops). When decreasing on a round working in the back loops only, use the next 2 back loops instead of front loops.
We will also be working in front loops or back loops only for some parts.
Numbers shown in ( ) indicates the number of stitches you should have at the end of the round.

To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x. For example; {sc, inc,} would mean sc into next st, increase (or 2 sc) in the next st. Or {sc x3, inc,} would mean sc each into the next 3 stitches, increase in the next st.

Crochet Pumpkin Pot

Pumpkin Pots Free Crochet Pattern

The pumpkin pot is made of a base bowl with the outer pumpkin shape worked on top and will be stuffed in the between the 2 layers. We will start at the base of the pot, work the inner bowl, followed by the rim of the opening, continuing with the outer pumpkin shape. This piece will be worked in continuous rounds unless otherwise stated. Where used, beginning ch1s do not count as stitches. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your first stitch.

Using Orange yarn start with a magic ring,

R1. 6sc into mr, pull closed (6)

R2. inc in each st (12)

R3. *sc, inc,* repeat between * to end of round (18)

R4. *inc, sc x2,* repeat between * to end of round (24)

R5. *sc x3, inc,* repeat between * to end of round (30)

R6. *inc, sc x4,* repeat between * to end of round (36)

R7. *sc x5, inc,* repeat between * to end of round, sl st into the first sc to join and turn your work here (42) Take a moment to weave in your starting tail end here, as it will become tricky to get to afterwards.

R8. We will now work in the opposite direction (along the wrong side of the previous rounds), this will make the right side show inside the bowl while the outer side will be covered by the shaped outer piece. Work this round in the front loops only. ch1, sc in each front loop (42)

R9. sc in each st (42)

R10. *inc, sc x6,* repeat between * to end of round (48)

R11. sc in each st (48)

R12. *inc, sc x7,* repeat between * to end of round (54)

R13.-R15. sc in each st (54 for 3 rounds)

R16. *dec, sc x7,* repeat between * to end of round (48)

R17. sc in each st (48)

R18. *dec, sc x6,* repeat between * to the end of round (42)

R19. *sc x5, dec,* repeat between * to the end of round, sl st into the first sc to join here (36)

R20. We will now work the rim of the pot, work this round in the back loops only, ch1, sc in each st, sl st into the first sc to join (36)

R21. Work in the back loops only again for this round, ch1, sc in each st, sl st into the first sc to join (36)

R22. We will now start working the outer pumpkin shape, work in continuous rounds again. ch1, sc, *2hdc x2, sc x4,* repeat between * to the end of round ending with sc x3 (48)

R23. sc, *2hdc x4, sc x4,* repeat between * to the end of round ending with sc x3 (72)

R24. *sc x10, dec,* repeat between * to the end of round (66)

R25.-R33. sc in each st (66 for 9 rounds)

R34. sc x2, *dec, sc x4, dec, sc x3,* repeat between * to the end of round ending with sc x1 (54)

R35. sc x3, *dec x2, sc x5,* repeat between * to the end of round ending with sc x2 (42) Remove your hook and keep your working loop using a stitch marker or just pull the loop long. Fill the space in between the base and outer piece with toy stuffing. Ensure you fill into the bumps made by the hdc stitches. Keep the inner bowl smooth by placing your hand inside to support and provide a firm base to stuff against.

R36. We will now join the outer piece to the base. Work single crochets to join the working round to the unused back loops of R8. at the base of the pot. ch1, sc going through both the working piece and the back loop of the base matching up with directly below, continue sc along each st of both pieces together (42) Fasten off and weave in end.

Add the Grooves to your Crochet Pumpkin

Work lines along the dips of the outer pumpkin shape to accentuate the grooves. Take a long strand of Orange yarn at least 1 metre in length (about an arms stretch worth) and your yarn needle. Attach the end to the inside of the pot, 2 rounds down and in the middle of 2 bumps. Thread the yarn through and out in between the middle of the outer top bumps, 2 rounds down from the top and loop around a stitch next to the yarn to secure in place.

Step 1. Bring the yarn straight down and thread it back through to the inside of the pot, 1 round up from the base.

Step 2. Pull the yarn to adjust the depth of the groove to the desired effect and secure by looping around the stitch next to the yarn.

Step 3. Feed the yarn in between the 2 layers to come out at the base of the next groove point. Loop around a stitch to secure in place,

Step 4. Bring the yarn straight up and back through in between the middle of the top bumps.

Step 5. Pull the yarn and loop around to secure to the desired depth.

Step 6. Feed the yarn through in between the layers coming out in between the top of the next 2 bumps and secure in place.

Repeat from Step 1. to make a line for each groove.

R5. inc x2, sc x6 (10)

R6. sc in each st (10)

R7. inc x2, sc x8 (12)

R8. sc in each st (12)

R9. *inc, sc,* repeat between * to the end of round, sl st into the first sc to join, fasten off Green yarn and weave in ends (18)

R10. Using Orange yarn make a slip knot, work this round in the back loops only. hook through the back loop of the first st and pull through the slip knot, sl st in each st ending in the same st as the beginning (18)

R11. Work this round in the front loops only of the Orange sl sts. *sc, inc x2,* repeat between * to the end of round (30)

R12. Work this round in the front loops only again, sc in each st (30)

R14. sc in each st (42)

R15. sc x3, *dec, sc x5,* repeat between * to the end of round ending with sc x2 (36)

R16. sc in each st (36)

R17. *dec, sc x4,* repeat between * to the end of round, sl st into the first sc to join here (30)

R18. Work this round in the back loops only including the decreases. ch1, *sc x3, dec,* repeat between * to the end of round (24)

R19. *dec, sc x2,* repeat between * to the end of round (18) Fill the lid including the stalk with stuffing, ensuring you stuff into the bumps at the hdc sts

R20. *sc, dec,* repeat between * to the end of round (12)

R21. dec x6 (6) cut yarn leaving a long tail, pull the end through the last loop and use your yarn needle to weave through the front loops of the last 6 sts, pull closed and secure.

Use the excess tail end to thread through the middle and out the top, at the base of the stalk, loop around a stitch and thread back down and out at the centre of the base. Pull to pinch the lid piece together, making it puff up next to the stalk. Repeat this process 3 more times, at evenly spaced points around the stalk. Secure, trim and weave in the excess tail end.

  1. Thank you for sharing this pattern. The pumpkin looks so cute. Will definitely give it a try. Happy hooking 🙂

  2. Hi. I’ve just made this and I found an error on Row 15 of the lid. After making some calculations, the row should read like this :

    Row 15 should be
Sc x3, *dec, sc x4, * repeat between *to the end of the round ending with sc x3 (36)

The way that Row 15 is written on the pattern does not let you use all 42 stitches from the last round, or does it decrease to 36 stitches. With the corrected Row I was able to decrease from 42 to 36 stitches. Like this pattern a lot. Thank you

    • Hi Jennfer,

Thank you for your comment. I have checked and confirmed, the pattern is correct as it is. I think a couple of points may have confused you.

When I say “ending with sc x2” it means that you will have only sc x2 left towards the end, not sc x5 as per the repeat. Hence, there isn’t a comma before to separate the instructions.

Also, that round is *dec, sc x5,* not sc x4, so this may be why you had an extra st at the end.

The way you have done it would still have reduced the stitches to 36, but not as evenly around.

I’m glad you like the Pumpkin Pots pattern! Thank you 🙂
