WHAT YARN SHOULD I USE?
You can use any yarn weight or type to make these baskets. Exact gauge isn’t too important but you want to keep your stitches compact, so go down a hook size if needed. This will help keep your basket firm, and minimise gaps between stitches giving a smoother surface.
For the little heart basket featured in this pattern, I have used Wendy Supreme Cotton Chunky yarn with a 5.5mm hook, available from LoveCrochet. The finished size of your basket will vary depending on your chosen yarn. Mine measures approximately 5” wide by 4” high, with a depth of 1.5”.
Let’s get started!
FREE CROCHET BASKET PATTERN
This free crochet basket pattern, uses the following US crochet stitches and terms:
(ch) Chain, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (hdc) Half Double Crochet,
(sc2tog) Single Crochet 2 Together – hook through the first st, yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), hook through the next indicated st, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo and pull through all loops on hook.
Invisible Join – Technique used for fastening off rounds to give a smooth finish without a visible slip stitch knot (explained within the pattern).
These baskets are made using the heart coasters as the base. R1. to R5. are worked exactly the same way as the coasters (please refer to the free heart coaster pattern for step by step photos), modifications are added from R6.. We will be working in joined rounds throughout. The beginning ch1s do not count as stitches.
Start by chaining 16,
2sc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc x6, 3sc, sc x6, 2sc in the last ch, rotate to work along the back of the chain and sc in the same last ch again going in on the other side of the knot, sc x5, sc2tog going through the next ch and 3rd ch along – skipping the middle opposite side of the 3sc, sc x6 bringing you up to the opposite side of the first worked 2sc sts, sl st into the first sc to join (32)
ch1, 2sc x2, sc x7, 3sc, sc x7, 2sc x3, sc x4, sc2tog going through the next and 3rd st along (skipping the middle previous sc2tog st), sc x4, 2sc, sl st into the first sc to join (38)
ch1, 2sc, sc, 2sc, sc x9, 3sc, sc x9, 2sc, sc, 2sc, sc, 2sc, sc x3, sc2tog going through the next and 3rd st along, sc x3, 2sc, sc, sl st into the first sc to join (44)
ch1, sc x2, 2sc, sc x2, 2sc, sc x9, 3sc, sc x9, 2sc, sc x2, 2sc, sc x2, 2sc, sc x4, sc2tog going through the next and 3rd st along, sc x4, 2sc, sl st into the first sc to join (50)
ch1, sc, 2sc, sc x3, 2sc, sc x12, 3sc, sc x12, 2sc, sc x3, 2sc, sc x3, 2sc, sc x2, sc2tog going through the next and 3rd st along, sc x2, 2sc, sc x2, sl st into the first sc to join, turn (56)
now working along the wrong side, ch1, sc in the back loops only of each st, sl st into the first sc to join (56)
ch1, sc x6, 2sc, sc x49, sl st into the first sc to join (57) The increase will be in the middle of the dip to separate and accentuate the 2 curves.
ch1, sc in each st, sl st into the first sc to join (57)
Repeat R8. for 3 more rounds or until you reach your desired basket height. You can leave the top edge as it is for a plain option, or add a pretty shell trim edging.
Turn after your last round to work in the other direction.
ch1, 2hdc in the same st you previously slip stitched into below, sk1, *sl st, sk1, 4hdc, sk1,* repeat between * 11 more times (until you reach the dip of the heart shape), sl st x2, sk1, 4hdc, sk1, sl st, sk1, 2hdc in the same first stitch as the beginning, sl st into the first hdc to join (71)
You have now finished your heart shaped basket. You can use different yarn weights and hook sizes to vary the size of your baskets.
Here, I have used a super bulky weight yarn with a 8mm hook, following the same pattern but adding another sc round instead of the shell edging to make a WIP basket. This measures approximately 8” wide by 6” high, with a depth of 3”.
Remember, you can purchase the PDF download which includes instructions to make these other heart projects too, scented heart pouches and heart pockets!
