FREE CROCHET WASHCLOTH PATTERN – CAL WEEK 3

Hi and welcome to part 3 of my Bathroom Set CAL! This week we have a free crochet washcloth pattern to match our set.

This washcloth uses the same up/down stitch pattern texture as the headband we made last week. It creates a great exfoliating, yet smooth surface, perfect for everyday cleansing.

The customised band label for this item, available exclusively as part of the Bathroom Spa Gift Set PDF download, includes general care instruction on the back. These labels make for the perfect finishing touch. Making gifts extra special or providing an air of professionalism to items for sale.

WHAT YARN DO I NEED?

I have continued with the same yarn I have used for my other items. A cotton/polyester blend DK weight yarn. You can use 100% cotton yarn in DK or Worsted weight instead. If you use Worsted weight, you will find your washcloth will be thicker and slightly bigger, but that’s fine for a washcloth. Just follow the guidance to make your piece square.

Right, let’s get started!

FREE FACE CLOTH CROCHET PATTERN – CROCHET ALONG

Free Crochet Washcloth Pattern

This free crochet washcloth pattern uses the following basic stitches: (ch) chain, (sl st) slip stitch, (sc) single crochet, (dc) double crochet, (st/sts) stitch(es). We will also be working into chain spaces, referred to as (sp). Instructions shown in [ ] are to be worked in the same stitch/place, this will be used later for the corners.

You will need a total of approximately 65g/150yds of yarn. 57g/131yds of your main colour and 8g/19yds of your accent colour. You will also need a 5mm hook, yarn needle and scissors.

The finished washcloth will measure approximately 11” square. This may increase by up to an inch, if using Worsted weight yarn.

We will start by making the centre square first, working in rows. Then add 2 borders working in rounds, to finish the washcloth design. Each step will be in continuous sequence, referring to both rows and rounds simply as R..

Main piece:

Using your main colour, chain 35,

R1.

dc in the 2nd ch from hook, sc, *dc, sc,* repeat between * to the end of chain, turn (34)

R2.-R26.

ch1, dc in the first sc st below, *sc in the next dc st, dc in the next sc st,* repeat between * to the end of row (34 for 25 rows or until the piece is square) Check your piece is square by folding up a bottom corner diagonally. The other bottom corner should fold in the centre, and the bottom edge should line up with the side edge. Once you have a balanced square, all the corners should line up.

Inner edging:

R27.

Rotate to work along the side edge. ch1 and sc evenly along the edge of the piece, you want to aim for a total of 34 single crochets although the exact number is not important – get as close to 34 as you can but ensure it is an even number of stitches. If you have worked a total of 26 rows, the general calculation is 1sc along the next 2 edge rows and 2sc in every 3rd edge row. Use the spacing of the previous stitches to help guide you. You may find it helpful to divide the edge, for example, place a stitch marker half way down and aim for 17 sc sts in that half and 17 in the remaining half. When you reach the bottom, ch2 and sc along the opposite side of the original starting chain to make 34 sc sts. ch2 and work back up the other edge making 34 sts or the same even number you made on the previous side edge. ch2 and sc x34 along the top stitches. ch2 and sl st into the first edging sc to join. Fasten of your main colour and weave in ends. (You will be aiming for 34 sts along each edge and will have ch2 sps at each corner)
