Crocheting Beanie and Slouch Hats
Crochet hat patterns are worked in one of three ways; in the round from the top down to the brim, from the brim up to the top, or worked flat and sewn together at the end. The only difference between crochet beanies and slouchy hats is the height of the hats, changing the way they sit on the head. Beanie hats generally fit snugly around the head, while slouch hats are longer with the top drooping down at the back of the head. In most cases, you can extend a beanie hat by increasing the height to make a slouchy hat, or reduce the height of a slouchy hat to make a beanie, creating a hat that is perfect for you.
I have grouped the free crochet hat and beanie patterns on this list into how the hat is crocheted and sorted them into adult, kids, and baby sizing so you can easily make a hat for everyone. FROM INDIE DESIGNERS
Crochet Hats in the Round – Working from Top Down
Crocheting hats in the round from the top down is a preferred technique among crocheters. The “top down” method starts at the crown of the hat, gradually expanding the circle until the desired circumference is reached before working on the length. When a crochet beanie is worked “in the round” it means there are no seams – that’s less sewing, less hassle, and a comfier fit. Here, you’ll find some super easy to work crochet hat patterns for beginners using basic crochet stitches, as well as some more textured beanie designs.
Crochet Beanies and Slouchy Hats – Working from the Brim Up
Crocheting hats from the brim up is great for using more complex stitch combinations. The process often begins with forming a ribbed brim, usually using a smaller crochet hook size. This ensures that the hat not only looks aesthetically pleasing but also fits perfectly and securely. You’ll then crochet along the edge of the brim before working the stitch pattern from the brim up to make a crochet hat. This method is very popular, due to the ease it provides in customizing the size and style of the hat. Some designs may work the main hat from the bottom upwards and add the brim to the bottom edge afterwards. Either way, I’m sure one of these crochet hats or slouchy beanie designs will become your favourite free crochet hat pattern!
Crochet Hats Worked Flat or in Rows
Perhaps you’re not a fan of working in the round, but did you know crochet hats can be made flat? A flat crochet hat is made in rows and simply seamed together to go around the head and cinched to close the top. It’s often easier to customize the hat to fit when working flat and a simple flat ribbed crochet hat is a great beginner project. This collection of free crochet hat patterns includes some simple beginner-friendly crochet hats plus some great patterns for textured intermediate-level designs.
