FIREMAN GONK FREE CROCHET PATTERN – Jacket & 2 Helmets

Fireman Gonk free crochet pattern - Gonk Heroes Fire Free Crochet Pattern

You will need Black, Yellow, Neon Yellow, Light Grey, White, Red, and a Skin Tone yarn for a Fireman Gonk. You can switch the main Yellow for other colours to match your local Fire departments if you like.

Free fireman crochet pattern – doll body:

Follow this guide for colour changes: Work the main body as detailed in the original Santa Gonk pattern from R1.-R7. in Black yarn for boots. Work R8. in Yellow yarn. Work a reflective strip here – R9. work a round of sc sts and then a round of sl sts in Neon Yellow, R10. work a round of sc sts in Light Grey into the tops of the sc sts behind the sl sts, R11. working in the back loops only sc in each st and then sl st in each using Neon Yellow (see R5.-R9. of the Jacket’s sleeves for written pattern for the strips). Work R12.-R15. in Yellow for the trousers starting in the tops of the sc sts behind the last sl sts and finish with an extra round of sl st in each st. Work R16.-R19. in White yarn starting in the top of the stitches of R15. behind the last round of sl sts. Work R20.-R30. in Skin Tone colour for the head.

For the arms, start R1.-R3. in Skin Tone and finish with White yarn.

Fireman Gonk free crochet patternFind the position for the nose by lining up the top of the nose under the 8th round from top. Attach the arms on either side under the 10th round from top. Add hair to the head using the same technique as used for the beard in any colour, length or style you choose. I have unravelled the plies and brushed out the yarn for a realistic hair finish.

Add straps by joining Red yarn to the sl sts of the top of the trousers, positioned centred with 7 sts apart at the front, ch18 bring it over the shoulder join to the opposite point at the back with a sl st, ch1 turn and sl st back along the ch18, sl st into the starting point again and fasten off. Repeat for the other side making a cross at the back.

Free Gonk crochet pattern – Fireman’s Jacket:

This piece will be worked in rows, beginning ch1s are turning chains and do not count as stitches. Using Yellow yarn start with chaining 27,
R1. sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each remaining ch, turn (26)
R2. ch1, inc, sc x2, ch5 and skip the next 5 sts, sc x4, inc x2, sc x4, ch5 and skip 5 sts, sc x2, inc, turn (30)
R3. ch1, inc, sc x3, sc x5 along the ch sts, inc, sc x10, inc, sc x5 along ch sts, sc x3, inc, fasten off Yellow (34)
R4. Join Neon Yellow with a sc in the last st you made, sc in the same st again, sc x12, inc, sc x6, inc, sc x12, inc, turn (38)
R5. ch1, sl st in each st, fasten off Neon Yellow (38)
R6. Work this row into the stitch tops of R4. behind the sl sts. Join Grey with a sc in the first stitch on the opposite end to the last fasten off, sc in the same st, sc x36, inc, fasten off Grey (40)
R7. Work this row in the front loops only of the previous Grey stitches. Join Neon Yellow with a sc in the last st you made, sc the same st again, sc x38, inc, turn (42)
R8. ch1, sl st in each st, fasten off Neon Yellow (42)

Add the edging and collar:

sc in the same st as last worked to turn the corner to work up the side edge, sc x12 along the side edge around the edge posts of each row, work along the opposite side of the starting chain sc x26, continue down the other side edge posts sc x13, turn (52) Working back over the last edging row, ch1, sc x7, hdc x3, dc x2, 2dc x2, dc x24, 2dc x2, dc x2, hdc x3, sc x7 (56) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Add the sleeves:

The opposite side of the ch5 and skipped 5 stitches of R2. and the sc posts at the edges make up the armholes. Join your Yellow yarn to the middle of the underarm (opposite side of the 3rd ch st).
R1. sc x3, sc around the sc post at the edge, sc x5 along the top of armhole, sc around the sc post at the other edge, sc x2, sl st into first sc to join (12)
R2.-R4. ch1, sc in each st, sl st into first sc join (12 for 3 rounds) fasten of Yellow.
R5. Join Neon Yellow with a sc, sc in each st, sl st to join (12)
R6. ch1, sl st in each st, sl st to join, fasten off Neon Yellow (12)
R7. Work this round into the top of the sc sts of R5. behind the sl st stitches, join Grey with a sc, sc in each st, sl st to join, fasten off Grey (12)
R8. Work in this round in the back loops only. Join Neon Yellow with a sc, sc in each st, sl st to join (12)
R9. ch1, sl st in each st, sl st to join, fasten off Neon Yellow (12)

R3. ch1,*inc in the sc st, fphdc around the hdc post,* repeat between * 7 more times, sl st to join (24)
R4. ch1, *inc, sc, fphdc around the hdc post,* repeat between * 7 more times, sl st to join (32)

Decorate your shield badge any way you like. I have added Red banners and embroidered FIRE DEPT and a number. Once finished, join the shield to the front of the helmet at the base only. For the eagle/beaver clasp, use Yellow yarn to join the top of the shield to the raised hdc post behind by making a few long stitches so that the shield is still vertical. Wrap the yarn around these stitches to hold them stiff to finish.
