Fun Miniature Sombrero Hat

This is my free crochet pattern for creating adorable mini Sombrero hats.

These little hats can be used for my Gonks or other dolls and teddies. They are also a great size as novelty photo prop hats for cats or dogs.

Or they’re cute as decorative items and the brim can even be used as a desk tidy to hold little trinkets like stitch markers!

You can use any yarn weight or type, with a suitable hook size to make your mini hat.

As a guide, I have used Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky (US Bulky), 100% acrylic yarn, with a 6mm crochet hook.

My finished hat measures approximately 13cm/5″ wide across the brim, 8cm/3″ tall, and has an inner head diameter of 6cm/2.25″.

I have used a mix of bright colours (Red, Hot Pink, Blue, Green, Yellow, and Orange) with a Beige. You can substitute colours as you choose. Keep to the same yarn weight throughout, and try to keep to the same yarn brands for consistency.

Crochet Terms & Techniques Used

For this pattern, we will be using the following US crochet terms and techniques:
(mr) Magic Ring, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (inc) Increase – 2sc in the same stitch.

We will also be working into Front Loops Only, and a special Back Loops Only, explained within the pattern.

For a neater finish, use an invisible join technique to fasten off your rounds. To do this, cut the yarn and pull the end up through the last st, use your yarn needle to thread the end through the second stitch and back into the last st, pull to adjust the loop to mimic the top of the first stitch, and weave the end into the back to secure.
