Fun Summer Sunflower Coasters (Free Crochet Pattern)

Sharing is caring!

Invite Summer into your home with my fun Sunflower coasters crochet pattern!

This is part 1, of my 2 part Sunflower set. You can find the matching Sunflower basket here.

These would brighten up your living room, or make a lovely housewarming gift.

I have used Aran/Worsted weight 100% cotton yarn to make my coasters. The finished coasters measure approximately 14cm/ 5.5” in diameter from tip to tip of the petals, with an internal coaster diameter of 8cm/3.25”.

You can use any Aran/Worsted weight yarn, but I would recommend cotton for greater absorbency.

Sunflowers Coasters and Basket Crochet Patterns

TO CROCHET THESE COASTERS, YOU WILL I NEED:

You will need Brown and Yellow yarn for your sunflowers. You’ll only need approximately 11g/20yds of Brown and 15g/30yds of Yellow per coaster.

I have used Rico Creative Cotton Aran, available from LoveCrafts, in Brown (58) and Banana (68).

I have used a 4.5mm hook to keep my stitches fairly tight, to help give structure to the coasters. If you crochet loosely, you may need a smaller hook.

Exact gauge isn’t too important. If you see big gaps forming, go down a hook size, If you find the coaster circle is cupping, go up a hook size.

You will also need a stitch marker, yarn needle, and scissors.

STEP BY STEP CROCHET PATTERN

This sunflower coasters crochet pattern, uses the following US crochet stitches and terms:

(mr) Magic Ring, (ch) Chain, (sp) Space, (sk) Skip, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (inc) Increase – 2sc in the same stitch, (hdc) Half Double Crochet, (dc) Double Crochet, (trc) Treble Crochet,

We will also be working Picot Stitches (p) at the tip of each of our petals to create a point. These are made chaining 3 and slip stitching into the back bump of the first chain. How to crochet the picot stitch for the sunflower petals

We will also be working in Back Loops Only for the coaster base.

A number shown before a stitch, means work that number of stitches in the same next stitch or space (eg. 3dc = work 3 double crochets into the same stitch/ space).

A number shown after x, means work the same stitch in the following number of stitches (eg. sc x3 = work a single crochet into each of the next 3 stitches).

Instructions within [ ] are to be worked into the same stitch/space.

Number within ( ) show the total number of stitches you should have after that row/round.

SUMMER COASTERS CROCHET PATTERN

We will be working in continuous rounds for the coaster base. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your first stitch. For added texture, we will be working the entire centre Brown section in the Back Loops Only.

Using your Brown yarn, start with a magic ring,

sc x6 into mr, pulled closed (6)

Work in the Back Loops Only from here on:

R2.

inc x6 (12)

R3.

*sc, inc,* repeat between * to the end of round (18)

R4.

*inc, sc x2,* repeat between * to the end of round (24)

R5.

*sc x3, inc,* repeat between * to the end of round (30)

R6.

sc, *inc, sc x4,* repeat between * to the end of round finishing with sc x3 (36)

R7.

*sc x5, inc,* repeat between * to the end of round (42)

R8.

We will slip stitch to level off at the end of this round. Do not pull the stitch tight as if you were joining the round, keep it the same size as your other stitches. This will move the starting point forward by 1 stitch.

sc x3, *inc, sc x6,* repeat between * to the end of round finishing with sc x3, sl st into the first stitch to level off (48)

R9.

*sc, ch1, sk1, sc, ch2, sk1,* repeat between * to the end of round, sl st into the first sc to join, fasten off and weave in ends. (60 – 24 sc sts, 12 ch2 sps, 12 ch1 sps)

Working in the back loops has created 2 different textures for the centre of the Sunflower. On the front side, you have a swirly spiral texture. On the back side, you have a bumpy texture. Both of these make great, realistic looking, disc florets for our Sunflowers.

Decide on which side you prefer, and work the next petals section with your chosen side facing you. I have opted for the swirly texture.

CROCHET SUNFLOWER PETALS

We will now add 2 rounds of petals using Yellow yarn. We’ll start with the smaller inner petals, working into the skipped stitches of R8., and then work the larger outer petals into the chain spaces made in R9..

Work through both loops of the sc stitches of R8., pinching the last round of chain loops backwards, to make it easier to access the sc stitches.

The inner petals consist of [hdc, dc, trc, p, trc, dc, hdc] all worked into the same stitch. When working the picots (p), work the sl st into the back bump of the first chain to get a sharper looking point.

The outer petals are made in the same way, only adding an extra trc stitch on either side, making them larger. These will be made in the ch2 spaces of R9..

R1.

Join Yellow yarn to any sc stitch below a ch2 space with a slip stitch:

*[hdc, dc, trc, p, trc, dc, hdc] in the next skipped st of R8., sl st in the following skipped st of R8.,* repeat between * to the end of round finishing with a sl st into the joining sl st to join the round (You should have a total of 12 petals)

We will now work a round of larger petals into the chain spaces of R9.:

ch1, sl st into the ch1 sp behind the first front petal, *[hdc, dc, 2trc, p, 2trc, dc, hdc] into the next ch2 sp, sl st into the following ch1 sp,* repeat between * to the end of round finishing with a sl st into the first st st to join, fasten off and weave in ends. (You should have a total of 12 large petals, sitting in between the front petals)

You may find that your petals curl up, we can fix this by blocking the coasters, or you may like the effect.

The amount of curling will depend on your tension, or the type of yarn used.

Here is a sample of my finished coaster before and after blocking:

Before and After Blocking Images of the Sunflower Coasters

WET BLOCKING

To make your petals lay flat, block your coasters. I have used the wet block technique for my coasters.

Start by soaking the finished coasters in cold water for at least 15 minutes. Remove them from the water and gently squeeze out the excess water. Place them in between a towel and press to soak up more fluid, until the coasters are just damp through.

Lay the coaster on a foam blocking board and pin around the centre, at the base of each inner petal. Now pin out the tips of each outer petal, and then pin the tips of the inner petals, lining them centrally in between the larger outer petals.

Allow to dry fully before unpinning.

You may want to remove the coasters from the water one at a time, so they don’t dry out while you’re busy pinning.
