Crochet Your Mini Christmas Tree to any size!

I have included round-by-round instructions below to create a 1ft tall tree, with a base of 5” in diameter, using Chunky/Bulky weight yarn and a 5mm crochet hook.

I will also give you the formula at the end, so that you can continue to create taller trees. You can make smaller trees simply by stopping earlier, after any hdc round following an increase round. I have added a couple of notes within the pattern for making a 6” and 9” tall tree.

Here, I stopped after R31., and skipped to the finishing off section, to make a smaller 6-inch tall tree, with a base of 3 inches in diameter.

You can also use any other weight yarn, but it will effect the finished size. As a guide, following the same 1ft (12 inches) pattern using Aran/Worsted weight yarn and a 4mm hook, will produce a tree approximately 9 inches tall, with a base of 4 inches in diameter.

What You’ll Need to Crochet A Mini Christmas Tree

I have used Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky acrylic yarn for my 1ft and 6-inch tall tree, and Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran for my 9-inch tree. But, you can work the trees in any yarn you prefer.

To work the full 1ft (12”) tree pattern in Chunky/Bulky weight yarn, you’ll need approx. 200yds, allow extra if you intend on adding more repeats to make a taller tree.

Working the same 1ft pattern in Aran/Worsted weight yarn to make a 9” tree, will require approx. 150 yds.

You will need a crochet hook 1mm smaller than recommended on your yarn label. For my Chunky weight yarn, I have used a 5mm hook. For my Aran weight, I have used a 4mm hook.

You will also need a yarn needle, and scissors.

Optional Extras: If you would like to decorate your trees, I would recommend using ribbons, mini tinsel, buttons or charms. You can make your tree light up, by using battery-powered fairy lights. I have found that 2 meter copper wire LED bottle lights work perfectly. You can even hide the battery packs under the trees!

Gauge: Exact gauge isn’t too important. You just want to keep your stitches compact, to make the tree cone sturdy enough to stand up on its own.
As a guide, my gauge measures: 2” square = 8 hdc x 2 pattern repeats (8 rounds), using Chunky yarn and a 5mm hook.

Crochet Stitches & Terms Used For The Mini Christmas Tree

This pattern is written using US crochet terms. Please refer to my Crochet Terms Conversion Chart for help with translating into UK terms.

(mr) Magic Ring, (ch) Chain, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (inc) Increase – 2sc in the same stitch, (hdc) Half Double Crochet, (dc) Double Crochet,

We will also be working into the Back Loops Only of stitches for some rounds, and through the Back Loops Only and Third Loops of hdc stitches on other rounds.

Numbers shown in ( ) at the end of each row/round indicates the number of stitches you should have at the end of that row/round.

To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x. For example: “sc, inc,” would mean sc into next st, increase (2sc) in the following st. Or “hdc x3, 2hdc,” would mean hdc into each of the next 3 stitches, followed by 2 hdc in the following st.

Pattern Notes – Construction of the Desktop Christmas Trees

  • The core tree and bushy branches are made together continuously, starting from the top. You’ll start with the point, turn to work a round of branches around the back loops only, turn back to continue with the core tree, turn again to work another round of branches, and so on.
  • The core tree is worked in joined rounds of hdc stitches, and increased with rounds of sc stitches.
  • Beginning chains will not count as stitches. Start working the first stitch in the stitch below the beginning chain.
  • The bushy branches are made of rounds of 3dc shells and sc stitches. These are worked along the wrong side of the piece, and will curl downwards when finished.
  • After working a round of increasing sc stitches, we will work a round of hdc stitches, and then work our branches into the Back Loops Only of these hdc stitches. When we turn to continue with the core tree, we will insert the hook through the back loop (the previously left front loops) and the third loop of the hdc stitches, so that you are working under 2 loops
  • Remember, you can stop on any hdc round after a sc increase round to make smaller trees.

R55.

ch1, hdc in each st, sl st to join, continue on to “finishing off” below (60)

Making taller trees:

If you would like to make the tree taller, you can continue working the same 4 round repeat, ie. From R52. to R55. (remembering to turn at the end of R55. instead of continuing on to finishing off). You will just need to increase the number of sc stitches you work before increasing by 1 for each additional repeat.

  • For the 1st round repeat, you’ll work the branches in the back loops only. As you are working 4 stitches over every 2 stitches, the end stitch count will be double the total of the last round made. Eg. The total number of stitches for R55. is 60, when you work R56. for another repeat, the total will be 120 stitches.
  • For the 2nd round repeat, you’ll work the same number of stitches as the round before the branches. Eg. working R57. will give you 60 stitches.
  • For the 3rd round repeat, you’ll need to work 1 extra ‘sc’ stitch before you work an ‘inc’ stitch, for each additional repeat. Eg. in R54. we worked sc x13 followed by inc, we would now need to work sc x14 followed by inc for the next repeat, then sc x15 for the next repeat and continue adding 1 to work more repeats. The total stitch count will be plus 4 from the previous round, eg. working R58. will give you 64 stitches.

  • For the 4th round repeat, you’ll work the same number of stitches you’ve just worked in the previous sc round. Remember to turn to work the branches for as long as you would like to continue. Once you’ve reached your desired height, make sure you end on a 4th round repeat and move on to “finishing off”.

Finishing off:

To make the base sturdier, work sl st in each st, starting from the next stitch along and finishing in the first stitch. Cut yarn and pull through the loop on hook to fasten off and weave in the end to secure.

Congratulations!
