Heart Jar Cozy Free Crochet Pattern

Sharing is caring!

This heart jar cozy crochet pattern was one of my first ever pattern designs. I designed and released it especially for Valentine’s Day 2015.

Five years on, I’ve decided to make it FREE on my blog!

This filet-crochet style heart can be made as a decorative storage jar cozy, or you can pop a tea-light inside a glass jar for a beautiful candle cover which gives a dancing display of light.

If you wish to use this as a candle cover, please use 100% cotton yarn to give the best heat resistance and avoid the melting of synthetic fibres.

This pattern is written so that you can easily adjust the size to fit your choice of jar or other container. So it makes for a great up-cycling project, using up old food jars, tins or bottles.

Choose a yarn size and hook to fit your choice of jar, you will need a minimum of 24 chains to fit around your container.

As a guide, I have used DK yarn with a 4mm hook to produce a height of 3” and Worsted weight yarn with a 5mm hook to produce a height of 3.5”, excluding finishing rows. For taller jars or bottles, you can always add rows to increase the height.

Gauge is not important as you’ll be working to your own measurements. Just try to keep your stitches consistent.

What You’ll Need To Crochet this jar cover

You will need 100% cotton yarn in any colour and size you choose.

I have used Stylecraft Craft Cotton DK weight yarn, and Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Solids Worsted weight yarn.

These covers only use a small amount of yarn each. Approximately 35-50yds, depending on the size of the container you want to cover.

Use a recommended hook size for your chosen yarn, or 1 size smaller if you tend to crochet loosely.

You will also need a yarn needle and scissors.

If you like, you can also add a pretty detail by threading a ribbon through the heart spaces.

If you want to make this a candle cover, you’ll need a tea-light candle, other small candle, or you could use LED lights.

Stitches & Terms Used For The Jar Cover:

(ch) Chain, (sk) Skip, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (hdc) Half Double Crochet.

To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x.
For example, {sc, inc,} would mean sc into next st, increase (2sc) in following st. Or {sc x3, inc,} would mean sc into each of the next 3 stitches, increase in the following st.

Crochet Jar Cozy – Pattern Notes

Joining rounds:

For this pattern we will be working in rounds. For a neater, straighter seam line, follow this joining process for each round:

ch2, skip the first stitch below the chain, then follow instructions to end of round.

Working into stitches and chains:

When working into each stitch (after the starting chain), ensure that you go in between the middle bar and under both loops.

Keep this consistent when working into the chain stitches you make throughout the pattern. This will help keep all stitches visible and the pattern in line.

Crocheting the heart jar Cosy

Make your starting chain:

Chain until you can wrap the chain comfortably around the jar and slip stitch into the first chain to join to make your starting circle. Ensure that your chain is not twisted and slip it onto the jar to check the fit, it should sit nicely around without stretching or falling off. The cover will become tighter as it’s made up and will need a bit of stretching to get on the jar, this will help it keep its place.

You will need a minimum of 24 chains (my jars use between 30 and 50 chains). If you have less, you’ll need to reduce your yarn and/or hook size

Finishing off:

You can fasten off and finish here if this is large enough to cover your jar.

Or you could add a row of sc along the top and the bottom, working into the original chain, if you have space left to cover for a nice neat finish.

If you have a taller jar or bottle and would like to cover more, you can add more rows evenly to R1. and R11., or work more sc rows to the top and bottom.

Weave in your ends and slip onto your jar and you have a lovely jar cover. You could add detail and make your heart shape stand out more by threading a pretty ribbon in and out of the heart spaces.

Safety First: Please take care if you are using real candles. Ensure you place the jar on a heat proof surface and never leave a lit candle unattended. Keep the cover away from the flame.
