Free Halloween Eyeball Coasters Crochet Pattern

Sharing is caring!

Crochet some spooky Halloween eyeball coasters with this easy crochet pattern.

These coasters are quick to make and only use a small amount of yarn, less than 10yds of each colour. So they are great for craft fairs, or classroom gifting!

Any Aran/Worsted weight yarn would work for this project, although cotton is recommended for its absorbency and heat resistance.

The finished eyeball coasters measure approximately 10cm/4” in diameter.

What you’ll need to crochet These Creepy Eyeball Coasters

I have used a mix of Aran/Worsted weight 100% cotton yarn I had in my stash (Drops Paris, Paintbox Yarns Cotton, and Rico Creative Cotton).

You will need the following colours for each coaster:
Black – less than 2yds
Iris Main Colour – less than 5yds
Iris Accent Colour – less than 3yds
White – less than 9yds
Pink or Red – less than 5yds

You’ll also need a 4.5mm crochet hook, a yarn needle, a stitch marker, and scissors.

I have used a steam iron for blocking. You could use the traditional wet-blocking technique if you don’t have an iron handy.

Gauge: Exact gauge is not too important. Just try to keep your stitches compact. I have used a 4.5mm hook with #4 Aran/Worsted weight yarn, which is half a hook size smaller than recommended for the yarn.

Here are some examples of different eye colours to try!

Crochet Stitches & Terms Used For Eyeball Coasters:

This pattern is written using US crochet terms. Please refer to my Crochet Terms Conversion Chart for help with translating into UK terms.

The pattern uses the following basic US crochet stitches:
(mr) Magic Ring, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (inc) Increase – 2sc in the same stitch.

The pattern also uses the following special stitches and terms, which will be explained in detail in the pattern notes section below:
Spiked Single Crochet (SPsc).
Invisible Join finishing technique.
Joining with a sc joining technique.

Numbers shown within ( ) indicates the number of stitches you should have at the end of the row/round.

Instructions within { } notes slight changes to the last repeat of the round.

To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x. For example: “sc, inc,” would mean sc into next st, increase (2sc) in the following st. Or “sc x3, inc,” would mean sc into each of the next 3 stitches, increase in the following st.

Eyeball Coasters Pattern Notes:

  • Work each colour in continuous rounds, using a stitch marker to keep your first stitch.
  • When slip stitching to level off, ensure you keep the stitch the same tension as your other stitches, do not pull this tight as if joining rounds.
  • Please pay attention to the yarn joining points to ensure that the stitches sit correctly.
  • When switching colours, join with a sc – start with a slip knot on hook, this will act as a working loop on hook – hook through the first stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both the loop on hook plus the slip knot loop. This will count as the first stitch of the round.
Joining with a Single Crochet for Eyeball Coasters
  • Fasten off each colour with an invisible join – Cut yarn, pull the end up through the last stitch, use your yarn needle to thread the end through the 2nd stitch along and back through the middle of the last stitch, pull the yarn to create a false stitch top over the first stitch, feed the end up through the back loop of the real first stitch to secure the round, and finish by weaving in the end through the back of the stitches.
Invisible Join Technique for Halloween Eyeball Coasters
  • We will be working a Spiked Single Crochet stitch (SPsc) as the last round of the iris. This is done by working into the stitch below the previous round. Instead of hooking through the normal stitch top loops, insert your hook at the base of that stitch, so you’re reusing the previous stitch below (indicated by the yarn needle below). Yarn over and pull up a loop, allowing slack to bring the yarn up to the round you’re working on, then yarn over and pull through both loops to finish the single crochet.

Adding veins to your Crochet Eyeballs

To make the eyeballs extra spooky looking, use the long tail end to embroider veins around the eyeball.

Make random lines and forks, up to 2 rounds into the White area, bringing the yarn back up to the edge and feeding it through the back of the Pink/Red sc stitches to carry the yarn to the next area.

Free Eyeball Coasters Crochet Pattern - Adding Veins

Try to mirror your stitches on the back of your work to avoid doubling over the yarn and creating bumps.

Once you’re done, secure and weave in your tail end, trimming off any excess.

Finishing Off Your Halloween Eyeballs

To neaten your finished coasters, simply use a steam iron to block them. Place a tea towel over the coasters and gently run a steam iron across.

If you don’t have an iron at hand, you can just use the traditional wet blocking technique to get your coasters nice and flat.

Congratulations!

You have now completed your spooky Halloween Eyeball Coaster.
