Free Cupcake Pin Cushion Crochet Pattern

Sharing is caring!

After creating my latest Sea Shells Beach Bag crochet pattern, I had some leftover cotton yarn. The mix of colours reminded me of cupcakes, so I thought I’d design a free cupcake pin cushion crochet pattern to make use of my scraps.

I love how the colourful pin heads look like 100s and 1000s sprinkles on my cupcakes!

How To Make A Crochet Cupcake

I have used Aran/Worsted weight Cotton yarn, with a 4mm hook. You can use any yarn type or weight you prefer, but it may affect your finished cupcake size. Use a hook size at least 1 size smaller than recommended, to keep stitches tight. This will give extra support for holding your pins in place.

My cupcakes measure approximately 2”/5cm in diameter at the base and 3”/7.5cm in diameter at the widest point, and stands 3.5”/ 9cm tall. Changing your yarn weight and/or hook size will vary your finished size. Exact gauge is not important for this project. Just make sure you use a smaller hook size to keep your stitches compact.

You can make these as play food too. Of course, you’ll leave out your pins and just replace the weight pouch with more stuffing. You could also sew on little beads for the 100’s and 1000’s sprinkles effect.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

I have used Drops Paris 100% Cotton Aran yarn (US Worsted weight) with a 4mm hook. You can use any yarn type or weight you prefer. This free cupcake pin cushion crochet pattern is a great project for using up scrap yarn.

You will need 3 colours – a beige or a suitable colour for the actual cake section, a colourful paper cupcake case colour, and your chosen frosting colour. You’ll only need approximately 15-20g or 20-30yds of each colour.

You will also need some Toy Stuffing (polyester fibre filling), A nylon stocking and dry rice to make a weight pouch (optional), a Stitch Marker, a Yarn Needle, and Scissors to make your crochet cupcakes.

Let’s get started!

FREE CUPCAKE PIN CUSHION CROCHET PATTERN

This free cupcake pin cushion crochet pattern uses the following US crochet stitches and terms:

(mr) Magic ring, (ch) Chain, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (inc) Increase – 2sc in the same stitch, (hdc) Half Double Crochet, (FPhdc) Front Post Half Double Crochet.

We will also work in Back Loops Only (BLO) and Front loops only (FLO).

We will fasten off with an invisible join, explained within the pattern.

We will also join with a sc. To do this, start with a slip knot on hook, this will act as a working loop on hook – hook through the first stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through both the loop on hook plus the slip knot loop.

Numbers shown in ( ) indicates the number of stitches you should have at the end of the row/round.

To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x. For example; {sc x3, inc,} would mean sc into next 3 stitches, inc (2sc) in the following stitch. Instructions within [ ] are to be worked into/around the same stitch.

WEIGHT POUCH:

For best results, use a weight inside the base of your pin cushion. I have made a weight pouch using dry rice and a nylon stocking. Simply insert 3 tablespoons full of dry rice into a nylon stocking and tie a knot in the stocking just above the rice. Trim off the excess stocking. You can reuse the off cuts by tying a knot at the cut.

You can use poly pellets, dry beans, sand, or other similar weighty substances instead.

If you don’t have any stockings handy, you can place bigger dry beans straight into your cupcakes, or make a pouch from scrap fabric. Just cut out a circle 6 inches in diameter, use a needle and thread to weave a running stitch around the edge, place your rice (or other weight substance) in the middle and pull the thread to close the circle around it. Tie the ends together and sew across the top a few times to secure.

Crochet Cupcake – Top cake section:

This will be a dome shape which we will attach to the top of the cupcake case later. Work in continuous rounds using a stitch marker to keep track of your first stitch. We’ll add the frosting directly onto this piece. To do this, we’ll work the first 7 rounds using the back loops only, leaving the front loops unused for working on the frosting.
Using beige yarn (or your inner cake colour), start with a magic ring,

R1.

sc x6 into mr, pull closed (6)

R2.

Working in the back loops only (BLO), inc x6 (12)

R3.

Continue in BLO, *sc, inc,* repeat between * a total of 6 times (18)

R4.

Continue in BLO, *inc, sc x2,* repeat between * a total of 6 times (24)

R5.

Continue in BLO, *sc x3, inc,* repeat between * a total of 6 times (30)

R6.

Continue in BLO, sc, inc, *sc x4, inc,* repeat between * a total of 5 times, sc x3 (36)

R7.

Continue in BLO, sc in each st (36)

R8.

Now work in the normal both loops of the previous round, sc in each st (36)

R9.

Continue in both loops, *inc, sc x3,* repeat between * a total of 9 times (45)

Fasten off with an invisible join – Cut yarn, pull the end through the last stitch, use your yarn needle to thread the end through the 2nd stitch and back through the middle of the last stitch, pull the yarn to create a false stitch top over the first stitch, secure to the back and weave in ends.

Cupcake Pin Cushion – Frosting:

We will work the frosting directly onto the 126 unused front loops of our cake dome.
Using your chosen frosting colour, join yarn with a sc to the outermost loop, hdc in each of the following loops continuing in a spiral until 4 loops remain (hdc x121), dc in each of the remaining 4 loops (dc x4), cut yarn and pull the end through the last stitch.

Use your yarn needle to thread the end through the centre of the original magic ring circle. Pull through firmly, this will fold the last dc stitches over to create a peak. Weave the end into the back of work to secure.
Use your yarn needle to bring the starting end through to the back of work and weave in to secure.

CROCHET PIN CUSHION – CUPCAKE CASE SECTION:

We will start this piece working in continuous rounds for the base, switching to joined rounds for the sides.
Using your chosen cupcake case colour, start with a magic ring,

R1.

sc x6 into mr, pull closed (6)

R2.

inc x6 (12)

R3.

*sc, inc,* repeat between * a total of 6 times (18)

R4.

*inc, sc x2,* repeat between * a total of 6 times (24)

R5.

*sc x3, inc,* repeat between * a total of 6 times, sl st into the first sc to level off (30)

When levelling off, do not pull the stitch tight like when joining rounds. Keep it even with the other stitches. This will move the starting position forward 1 stitch.

R6.

Starting from the next st along, work into the back loops only, sl st x30, sl st into the first sl st to join (30)

We will be joining rounds from here on, pull the joining sl st tight. Work the next round going through the back loops only of these sl sts and the same back loops of R5. used for this round.

R7.

ch1, hdc through both back loops of each st, sl st into the first hdc to join (30)

To create the crimped effect for the sides of the cupcake cases, we will alternate between working raised hdc stitches (FPhdc) and normal hdc stitches. Work the normal hdc stitches into the front loops only (FLO) of the stitch tops, this will help prevent the stitches from twisting. Each comma will represent the next stitch. Instructions within [ ] are to be worked into and around the same raised stitch.

R8.-R10.

Work the hdc sts into the front loops only. ch1, *FPhdc, hdc,* repeat between * a total of 15 times, sl st into the first st to join (30 for 3 rounds)

R11.

Work the hdc sts into the FLO. ch1, *FPhdc, hdc, [hdc, FPhdc], hdc, FPhdc, hdc,* repeat between * a total of 5 times, sl st into the first st to join (35)

R12.

Work the hdc sts into the FLO. ch1, *FPhdc, hdc, hdc, FPhdc, hdc, [hdc, FPhdc], hdc,* repeat between * a total of 5 times, sl st into the first st to join (40)

R13.

Work the hdc sts into the FLO. ch1, *[hdc, FPhdc], hdc, hdc, FPhdc, hdc, hdc, FPhdc, hdc,* repeat between * a total of 5 times, sl st into the first st to join (45)

Continue to join the pieces.

JOIN PIECES:

We will now join the top cake section to our cupcake case and add the stuffing. Work this joining round in the opposite direction (top down), going through the back loop only of the top cake piece first and then through both loops of the case piece to join them together.

Continuing on from the cupcake case section, ch1, *sc x4, inc,* repeat between * a total of 4 times, place your weight pouch inside your cupcake case and press it down to fill the base evenly,

repeat between * 2 more times, fill the cupcake firmly (above the weight pouch) with stuffing, repeat between * 2 more times, ensure the cupcake is evenly stuffed using a stuffing rod or the end of a hook to spread the stuffing around and add more if needed, repeat between * once more to finish the join (54) Cut yarn and fasten with an invisible join.
