Free Crochet Snowman Baubles

Sharing is caring!

Crochet some adorable Snowman baubles for your Christmas tree, or as little festive gifts!

These baubles are quick to make, only use a small amount of yarn, and can be made with any weight or type of yarn you like.

I have used a range of acrylic yarn. Different yarn weights will produce different sized baubles.

Here is a size guide of approximate finished diameters:

Gauge is not too important. Just try to keep your stitches fairly tight, so that your stuffing doesn’t show through.

For best results, stick with the same yarn brand for your head and hat.

What You’ll Need To Crochet Snowman Baubles

I have used Paintbox Yarns Simply acrylic yarn in DK, Aran, and Chunky weight to create different sized baubles.

These baubles only use a small amount of yarn each. Approximately 20yds of White for the head and less than 10yds of 2 colours for the hat, and a small amount of Orange and Black or Pink for the face.

Use a recommended hook size for your chosen yarn, or 1-2 sizes smaller if you tend to crochet loosely.

I have used safety eyes in various sizes, from 6mm to 10mm. Choose any size you find suitable for your head size.

You will also need a stitch marker, some toy stuffing, a yarn needle and scissors.

Stitches & Terms Used For The Snowman Decorations:

(ch) Chain, (mr) Magic Ring, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (dc) Double Crochet, (inc) Increase – 2sc in the same stitch, (dec) Decrease (invisible) – hook through the front loops only of the next 2 stitches and work a sc.

Invisible join: A neat technique used to finish off rounds – Cut yarn and pull the tail up through the last stitch. Use your yarn needle to thread the tail through the second stitch along and back into the middle of the last stitch and pull to form a faux stitch top over the first stitch. You’ll find that the real first stitch will stick out a little. Thread the tail up through the back loop of the real first stitch and weave the tail in to tack it down and secure the end.

Number within ( ) show the total number of stitches you should have after that row/round.

To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x.
For example, {sc, inc,} would mean sc into next st, increase (2sc) in following st. Or {sc x3, inc,} would mean sc into each of the next 3 stitches, increase in the following st.

Crochet Snowman Tree Ornaments

We’ll start with the Snowman head, adding the face halfway through, and then make the bobble hat to fit onto the head afterwards. We will be working in continuous rounds throughout. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your first stitch of each round.

Crochet Snowman Head

Using White yarn, start with a magic ring,

R1.

sc x6 into mr, pull closed (6)

R2.

inc x6 (12)

R3.

*sc, inc*, repeat between * a total of 6 times (18)

R4.

*inc, sc x2*, repeat between * a total of 6 times (24)

R5.

*sc x3, inc*, repeat between * a total of 6 times (30)

R6.-R9.

sc in each st (30 for 4 rounds)

Add the face here.

Add an Orange nose over R5. in between the increases.
Working across a sc x3 section in between two increases, make a stitch along the top of the middle of 3 stitches. Then make a longer stitch from the base of one of the outer stitches to the other. Thread through to the front coming out at the right of the top stitch. Loop upwards, under both stitches. Loop upwards again 4 times, be careful not to pull too tightly, allow the top and bottom stitches to stay the same distance apart. Finish by threading in through the left of the bottom stitch. Weave the ends in at the back of the nose to secure.

Add safety eyes 1 round above the nose, using the stitch gaps in line with the outer edge of the nose, allowing 2 stitches in between them.

Embroider the mouth using thinner Black or Pink yarn (or split plies of yarn to make thinner strands). Start by threading out through the base of one of the increase stitches next to the nose, and in through the round below, going diagonally inwards. Come back out at the base of the other increase stitch, and in diagonally inwards again. Join the 2 stitches to complete the little smile.

Continue crocheting the head:

R10.

*dec, sc x3*, repeat between * a total of 6 times (24)

R11.

*sc x2, dec*, repeat between * a total of 6 times (18)
Fill the head firmly with toy stuffing here.

R12.

*dec, sc*, repeat between * a total of 6 times (12)

R13.

dec x6 (6)

Cut the yarn leaving a tail of approx. 5” and pull it up through the last stitch.

Cut a piece of ribbon (or yarn) approx. 8” long, fold it in half and knot the ends together to create your hanging loop.

Use your yarn needle to weave the tail end through the front loops only of the 6 stitches. Insert the knot of the hanging loop into the top of the head and pull the top closed around the knot. Stitch across through the middle of the hanging loop to secure and weave in the end.

Make a mini Pompom

Make a mini pompom by wrapping your secondary colour yarn around 2 fingers approximately 20 times, cut the yarn and cut an extra length approx. 6” long, feed the length of yarn through the middle of the 2 fingers and tie it tightly around the centre of the pompom.

Slide the yarn off your fingers and tie the centre again to secure. Cut through the folded sections of the yarn, shake it out, and trim into a smooth circular shape.

Use the ends of the centre tie to attach it to the top of your hat.

Find the front of your hat (opposite the brim join), and insert your hook 2 rounds down from the top. Use your hook to pull the hanging loop of the head through the hat and position the hat to finish.
