Free Crochet Pattern for Christmas Tree Baubles
These sweet little robins make the perfect accompaniment to last year’s Gingerbread Family Tree Decorations which you can also find for Free here.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

To make robins, you will need some Red or Orange, Beige, Brown, and a little Yellow yarn. You can use any type or weight of yarn you like, just keep to the same weight for each colour. Your chosen yarn weight and hook size will determine your finished bauble size.

I have created some with Aran/Worsted weight acrylic yarn and a 5mm hook measuring approximately 2” in diameter. My larger robin was made using Chunky/Bulky weight acrylic yarn and a 6mm hook, this measures approximately 2.5” in diameter.

These little robin baubles only use a small amount of yarn. You could even use up your scrap yarn to make different coloured birdie baubles.

Exact gauge is not important. Try to keep your stitches fairly tight so that the stuffing doesn’t show through. Use a recommended hook size for your chosen yarn weight, adjusting your hook size down if needed.

You will also need:
Some toy stuffing (polyester fibrefill),
Some plain black safety eyes, I have used 6mm eyes with my Aran/Worsted weight yarn, and 9mm with my Chunky/Bulky weight yarn.
A yarn needle and Scissors.

Now let’s get started!

FREE CROCHET PATTERN FOR CHRISTMAS TREE BAUBLES

This free crochet pattern for Christmas tree baubles to make robin decorations uses the following US crochet stitches and terms:
(mr) Magic Ring, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet,
(inc) Increase – 2sc in the same stitch,
(dec) Decrease (invisible) – insert the hook into the front loop only of the next 2 stitches and work a single crochet (yarn over and pull up a loop through both front loop stitches (2 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops).

Numbers shown in ( ) indicates the number of stitches you should have at the end of the round.

To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x. For example; {sc, inc,} would mean sc into next st, increase (2sc) in next st. Or {sc x3, inc,} would mean sc each into the next 3 stitches, increase in the next st.

We will be working in joined rounds to keep colour changes level. When starting the next round, don’t ch1 at the beginning, this will help keep your joins less visible. Just work straight into the same first stitch you previously slip stitched into.

When changing colours, change on the last pull through of the last sc of the previous colour – Start a sc in the current colour (hook through stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop so you have 2 loops on hook), then drop your current colour yarn and pick up you new colour to finish the stitch (yarn over and pull the new colour through the 2 loops on hook of the previous colour). This leaves the new colour on your hook, ready to work the next stitches.

Add your face. The Beige section will be at the bottom of your robin.
Use a strand of Yellow yarn and your yarn needle to stitch a beak. Starting from the back, thread out through the top of the first round and in through the middle of the magic ring centre, repeat 2 more times to make 3 little stitches to form the beak. Weave in to secure the ends before trimming off excess.
Add your safety eyes in between the 2nd and 3rd round of the Red/Orange section, on either side of the beak.
You can play around with your positioning and decide how close or wide you prefer the eyes to be. If you like, you can embroider some eyes with Black yarn instead.

Replace your hook into the held stitch to continue.

Take a length of Red yarn, fold in half and tie a large double knot near the ends to make a hanging loop. Insert your hook through the centre top of your robin (3 Brown rounds back from the Red/Orange section), place the fold of your hanging loop on the hook and pull it through the top. Ensure your knot is large enough not to come through your stitches.

Stuff the bauble with your toy stuffing. Fill firmly to create a smooth, firm ball.

Replace your hook into the held stitch to continue.

R10.

dec x6, sl st into the first sc to join (6) Cut your yarn leaving a tail of few inches and pull it through the last loop on hook to fasten. Use your yarn needle to weave your tail end through the front loops only of the last 6 stitches, pull to close and weave in the end to secure.
