WHAT DO I NEED?
You can use any yarn weight to make your little stuffed hearts, I recommend varying the sizes and colours to create more of an interesting display. The hearts only use a small amount of yarn each (less than 6 yards), so this would be a great project for using up your scrap yarn!
Exact gauge isn’t too important but you want to keep your stitches compact, so if necessary, go down a hook size than recommended on your yarn.
For the lid, I recommend using DK (Light Worsted) weight yarn, but Worsted weight would work too. You can use any type of yarn.
For this free crochet hearts pattern, I have used a range of acrylic yarns in DK, Aran, and Chunky weight. I have used different hook sizes ranging from 3.5mm to 6mm to vary the sizes of my hearts. My finished hearts measure between 1″ and 2.5″ wide.
For the doily lid, I have used DK weight White yarn with a 4.5mm hook, for more of a delicate lacy effect. You can use Worsted weight yarn if you don’t have any DK (Light Worsted) weight yarn.
You will need a glass jar with an opening diameter of approx. 3 inches or 7.5 cm across.
Most jars will have a similar measurement for the opening, the actual size of jar can vary.
You will also need some Toy Stuffing or pieces of scrap yarn to stuff your little hearts, some Ribbon to secure your lid (or you can make a chain of yarn if you don’t have any available), a Stitch Marker, a Yarn Needle and Scissors.
If you would like to make a scented display, you’ll also need fragrance or essential oils of your scent choice.

Free Crochet Hearts Pattern

This free crochet hearts pattern, uses the following US crochet stitches and terms:
(mr) Magic Ring, (ch) Chain, (ch sp) Chain Space, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (dc) Double Crochet,
(inc) Increase – 2sc in the same st,
(dec) Decrease (invisible) – hook through the front loops only of the next 2 sts and work a sc,
(Vst) V Stitch – [dc, ch1, dc] in the same stitch/place,
We will also be using the following special stitches:
(dc2cl) Double Crochet 2 Stitch Cluster – Yarn over and hook through stitch/place, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and hook through the same stitch/place again, yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.
(dc3cl) Double Crochet 3 Stitch Cluster – Yarn over and hook through stitch/place, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yarn over and hook through the same stitch/place again, yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yarn over and hook through the same stitch/place again, yarn over and pull up a loop (5 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through 2 loops (4 loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops.
Hearts:
Work in continuous rounds, marking your first stitch with a stitch marker as you work each round.
Start with a magic ring,
R1.
sc x4 into mr, pull ring closed (4)
R2.
sc, inc, sc, inc (6)
R3.
sc, inc, sc x2, inc, sc (8)
R4.
sc x2, inc, sc x3, inc, sc (10)
R5.
sc x2, inc, sc x4, inc, sc x2 (12)
R6.
sc x2, inc x2, sc x4, inc x2, sc x2 (16)
R7.
sc x2, inc, sc x2, inc, sc x4, inc, sc x2, inc, sc x2 (20)
R8.
We will now work the first top section of our heart.
sc x10, skip the remaining 10 sts and continue in your marked first stitch (10)
R9.
dec x5 (5)
Cut your yarn and pull the end through the last stitch to fasten off. Use your yarn needle to weave the end through the front loops of the last 5 stitches and pull to close. Weave in end, you can just tuck the starting end inside. First top finished.
Fill this top and the base of heart with toy stuffing up to the opening. If you are making scented hearts, add a few drops of fragrance oil onto the stuffing here.

R10.
Join yarn with a sl st to the middle of the opening at the base of the first top section.
sc x10 along the skipped sts of R8. (10)
R11.
dec x5 (5)
Fasten off, finish stuffing the heart through the small opening before weaving the end through the fronts loops to close off. Weave in end. (I have used the end of a straight crochet hook to poke the stuffing inside)
Make as many hearts as you like to fill your jar.
You can vary your hook and/or yarn weight to create a range of sizes.
Jar Lid:
For the lid, I have used #3 DK (US Light Worsted) weight yarn to give more of a delicate lacy effect. The lid is worked with a 4.5mm hook to give a finished diameter of approximately 3 inches (7.5cm) across the top. If you only have #4 Worsted weight yarn, you can use the same hook size and achieve the same measurements, but it would just look a little bulkier.
Lace Doily Lid:
We will be working in joined rounds for this piece. Pay attention to the end of round joining technique, as it will vary depending on where we need to be positioned for the next round. We will be using the special stitches for this section, please refer to the stitches and terms above for full descriptions.
For the benefit of photo clarity, I have used Pink yarn for my sample. I would recommend using White yarn for the lacy lids.
Start with chaining 6 and slip stitch into the first chain to form a circle,
R1.
working into the circle, ch2 and dc (counts as the first dc2cl), *ch2, dc2cl,* repeat between * 6 more times, ch1 and sc into the top of the starting dc2cl to join (this counts as a ch2, ending in the middle for positioning for the next round). (you will have a total of 8 dc2cl with ch2 in between each)
R2.
ch4 and dc around the sc post below (counts as the first Vst), *ch1, Vst in the next ch2 sp,* repeat between * 6 more times, sc into the 3rd ch of the starting ch4 to join (counts as a ch1 sp, ending at the beginning of it for positioning). (you will have a total of 8 Vst with ch1 in between each)
R3.
ch2 and dc2cl around the sc post below (counts as the first dc3cl), *ch3, sc around the ch1 in the centre of the next Vst, ch3, dc3cl around the next ch1 sp,* repeat between * 6 more times, ch3, sc around the last ch1 sp, ch2 and sc into the top of the starting dc3cl to join. (you will have a total of 8 dc3cl with {ch3, sc, ch3} in between each)
R4.
sc around the sc post below, *ch3, sc in the next ch3 sp close to the dc3cl,* repeat between * all the way around ending in the last ch3 sp (ie. work the sc sts on either side of the dc3cl sts with ch3 in between each), ch3 and sl st into the first sc st to join (16 sc sts with ch3 in between each)
For this next round, instead of working around the ch sps, we will work into the 2nd ch st of the ch3s to keep the base of our Vsts together.
R5.
sl st along into the 2nd ch of the first ch3, ch4 and dc into the same 2nd ch below (counts as the first Vst), *ch1, Vst into the 2nd ch of the next ch3,* repeat between * all the way around for each ch3, ch1 and sl st into the 3rd ch of the starting ch4 to join (16 Vsts with ch1 in between each) The piece will no longer lay flat, that’s ok as this is where it will flip down for the lid.
R6.
sc around the first ch1 in the centre of the Vst below, *3dc in the next ch1 sp, sc in the centre of the next Vst,* repeat between * all the way around ending with 3dc in the last ch1 sp, sl st into the first sc to join (16 3dc shells with sc in between each) Fasten off and weave in ends.
Add a tie ribbon by weaving it in and out of the dc posts of round 5. If you don’t have any ribbon, you can just make a tie string by chaining yarn.
