WHAT WILL I NEED?

I have used Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran 100% acrylic. I recommend using an Aran/Worsted weight yarn, although the same gauge can be achieved with Chunky yarn as well. Acrylic yarn will allow a fair amount of stretch for a snug fit.

You will need Cream or White yarn for the top sauce section, and Brown for the pudding section. Less than 50g/100yds of each colour will be needed to make even the largest size. You will also need a small amount of Red and Green yarn for the holly.

The size of hook or hooks needed will depend on the size you are making and your gauge. Check the size chart and gauge guidelines below.

You will also need a Stitch Marker, Tape Measure, Yarn Needle, and Scissors to make your Christmas beanie hat.

Shall we get started?

FREE CROCHET CHRISTMAS PUDDING
BEANIE HAT PATTERN

This free crochet Christmas pudding beanie hat pattern uses the following US crochet stitches and terms:

(mr) Magic ring, (ch) Chain, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (hdc) Half Double Crochet, (dc) Double Crochet, (trc) Treble Crochet, (FPsc) Front Post Single Crochet, (FPhdc) Front Post Half Double Crochet, (FPdc) Front Post Double Crochet, (FPtrc) Front Post Treble Crochet, (BLO) Back Loop Only.

We will fasten off with an invisible join, explained within the pattern.

Numbers shown in ( ) indicates the number of stitches you should have at the end of the row/round.

To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x. A number shown before a stitch, means work that number of stitches in the same next stitch making an increase. For example; {dc x3, 2dc,} would mean work a dc into next 3 stitches, and 2 dc sts in the same following stitch.

Instructions within [ ] are to be worked all into the same stitch.

SIZING:

Use the chart below, and follow the pattern as indicated, for your required size. For some sizes, you will need to swap hook sizes to achieve the correct measurements. Keep a tape measure handy, to check your measurements as you work the pattern.

The hat is designed to have a snug fit so that the head fills out the Christmas pudding shape. Because of this, we will be making the hats shorter in length than standard beanies. You can adjust the length to fit the individual if needed, but I have reduced the standards as a guide for all sizes.

Free Crochet Christmas Pudding Beanie Hat Pattern Size GuideYou can click on the chart to zoom in.

GAUGE:

To ensure your hat will fit correctly, Work Out Your Gauge!

We will be working to the gauge of the widest diameter across R1. = 1inch. From one dc st to the opposite dc st.

Using a 5mm hook with Aran (US Worsted) weight yarn, work round 1 (R1.) as written in the pattern below. Measure the diameter just within the stitch tops, marked with the pins, as this will be the actual width after you work the next round through the stitch tops.

Adjust your hook size if necessary and increase your hook size by the same increment if you need to swap hooks for certain sizes.

CHRISTMAS PUDDING HAT – SAUCE SECTION:

The beanie hat is worked top down, starting with the Cream/White sauce section of the Christmas pudding. We will be working in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker to mark your first stitch to keep track.

Crown:

Pay attention to specific instructions for your required size at the end of rounds. Once you’ve completed the Crown section of the hat, as indicated for your size, the diameter of your circle should match Crown Diameter measurements given in the chart above.

I have made an Adult Small size for my photographed sample. Stitch count numbers will be given in size order, small to large, as shown in the size chart above.

Using Cream or White yarn and your 5mm hook, start with a magic ring,

Sides:

Your total stitch count should remain the same as your last round, for the rest of the top sauce section of the beanie. When working the drippy effect on R4., we will be working around the front posts of the previous stitches only, keeping the stitch tops unused for joining the pudding section.

If you have changed hook size for the last round of your crown section, keep to this new hook size for the sides.

Cut yarn and fasten off with an invisible join – Pull the tail end up through the last stitch. Using your yarn needle, feed the tail through the 2nd stitch and back into the last stitch. Pull the yarn through to create a false stitch top over the 1st stitch. Secure to the back of work and weave in ends. This gives you a neat finishing join when working in rounds, which can be applied to most hat patterns.

CHRISTMAS PUDDING BEANIE – PUDDING SECTION:

We will work the Brown pudding section into the previously unused stitch tops of R3. of the Sauce Sides section, behind the last drippy effect round. We will work this section in continuous rounds. You will need your measuring tape to check the hat height against the size chart.

Use the same hook size as you last worked with for the sauce section. Join Brown yarn with a sl st to the last stitch of the previous Sides R2.,

R1.

ch1 (counts as a ch1 sp), sc in the first stitch of the round, sc in each remaining stitch, sc in the same stitch as your join (49|61|61|61|73|73|73|85|85|97)

R2.

sc into the previous beginning ch1 sp and mark this stitch with your stitch marker, *ch1, skip the next sc, sc in the next sc,* repeat between * to the end of round (49|61|61|61|73|73|73|85|85|97)

Keep your stitch marker in this first stitch throughout, to mark the starting point as a guide.

R3.+

*ch1, skip the sc st, sc into the ch1 sp,* repeat between * continuously until you reach the required height (given in the size chart) measuring from the top centre of the magic ring to the bottom edge, finishing in line with the stitch marker (49|61|61|61|73|73|73|85|85|97)

Do not fasten off yet. Choose between the edging options to finish off your beanie hat.

CROCHET XMAS BEANIE – EDGING OPTIONS:

I have created a sweet little rolled hem effect, like you find on some knitted hats, to add a finishing touch to the hat. If you would like a simpler finish, you can just skip to the Plain Edge option below.

Rolled Edge:

We will continue on from the pudding section, and work in continuous rounds again. Mark the first stitch of your round to keep track. Make sure you don’t work your slip stitches too tightly, keep them even with the previous rounds, go up a hook size if needed.

R1.

sl st into the Back Loop Only of each stitch (49|61|61|61|73|73|73|85|85|97)

R2.-R3.

repeat R1. 2 more times, creating a total of 3 rounds of BLO sl sts (49|61|61|61|73|73|73|85|85|97)

R4.

sl st into the BLO of the first st to bring the start in line with R1. below (for adjustment only, does not count as a st), hook through the unused Front Loop of R1. and the BLO of R3. and sl st, repeat all the way around to roll up the edge.

Fasten off with an invisible join and weave in ends.

Plain Edge:

Instead of the rolled edge effect, you can opt for a simple single crochet finish for your beanie.

R1.

sc in each sc st and ch1 sp (49|61|61|61|73|73|73|85|85|97)

Fasten off with an invisible join and weave in ends.

Free Crochet Christmas Pudding Beanie Hat Pattern Holly Leaves

CROCHET HOLLY LEAVES:

We will now make some holly to top off your Christmas Pudding hat. For smaller sizes (Newborn up to Child size) use a 4mm hook, for the larger sizes (Youth up to Adult XLarge) use a 5mm hook.

Using Green yarn, start by chaining 10,

R1.

work through the top and back loops of the chain starting from the 2nd ch from hook, 2sc, sc, hdc x2, 2dc, hdc x2, sc, 2sc, now rotate to work back along the unused bottom loops of the starting chain, sc x2, hdc x2, 2dc, hdc x2, sc x2 (22)

R2.

sl st into the first st, sl st, *[sc, ch2, sl st into the back bump of the first ch, sc] all in the next st, sl st x2,* repeat between * finishing in the first st again, fasten off leaving a long tail for attaching (You should have made a total of 7 holly prickles around your leaf)

Repeat to make a 2 leaves per hat. Use the tail ends to attach them to the centre of your hat, stitching through the bottom tip only, allowing a slight overlap in placement.

Free Crochet Christmas Pudding Beanie Hat Pattern Holly Berries

CROCHET HOLLY BERRIES:

Keep to the same hook size as your leaves. Work in continuous rounds. Using Red yarn, start with a magic ring allowing a starting tail of approx. 5”,

R1.

sc x6 into mr, pull closed (6)

R2.

sc in each st (6)

R3.

sc in each st, (6)
Cut yarn approx. 7” long and pull the tail end through the last st, stuff your starting tail inside the berry using the tip of your hook, use your yarn needle to weave the tail end through the front loops only of each st, pull closed and secure in place

Repeat for your desired number of berries and use the tail ends to attach them to your hat.
