WHAT YARN SHOULD I USE FOR THIS BASKET?

You can use any yarn weight or type to make these baskets. Exact gauge isn’t too important but you want to keep your stitches compact, so go down a hook size if needed. This will help keep your basket firm, and minimise gaps between stitches giving a smoother surface.

For the little heart basket featured in this pattern, I have used Wendy Supreme Cotton Chunky yarn with a 5.5mm hook. The finished size of your basket will vary depending on your chosen yarn. Mine measures approximately 5” wide by 4” high, with a depth of 1.5”.

Let’s get started!

Stitches and Terms Used:

This free crochet basket pattern, uses the following US crochet stitches and terms:

(ch) Chain, (sk) Skip, (sl st) Slip Stitch, (sc) Single Crochet, (hdc) Half Double Crochet,

(sc2tog) Single Crochet 2 Together – hook through the first st, yo and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), hook through the next indicated st, yo and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo and pull through all loops on hook.

Invisible Join – Technique used for fastening off rounds to give a smooth finish without a visible slip stitch knot (explained within the pattern).

Numbers shown in ( ) indicates the number of stitches you should have at the end of the row/round.

To help you read this pattern, the commas represent each stitch or the number of stitches after x. For example; {sc, 2sc,} would mean sc into next st, 2 sc in the same next st. Or {sc x3, 2sc,} would mean sc each into the next 3 stitches, 2sc in the next st.

Heart Basket

These baskets are made using the heart coasters as the base. R1. to R5. are worked exactly the same way as the coasters (please refer to the free heart coaster pattern for step by step photos), modifications are added from R6.. We will be working in joined rounds throughout. The beginning ch1s do not count as stitches.

Congratulations!

You have now finished your heart shaped basket. You can use different yarn weights and hook sizes to vary the size of your baskets.

Here, I have used a super bulky weight yarn with a 8mm hook, following the same pattern but adding another sc round instead of the shell edging to make a WIP basket. This measures approximately 8” wide by 6” high, with a depth of 3”.
