Celebrate the Royal Wedding in style with this cute Union Jack fascinator!

This mini hat was originally designed for Adam Gonk’s new celebration outfit, but these came out so cute, that I had to make one to wear myself!

ROYAL WEDDING SPECIAL ~ MINI HAT FASCINATOR

I think this is a fitting way to celebrate the upcoming Royal wedding, not only will you be sporting the colours, fascinators are favoured among the Royal family and perfect attire for weddings!

Free Royal Wedding Crochet Gonk PatternThis pattern is for a mini top hat style fascinator. You could also make the Gonk’s bowler hat design if you prefer, you can find that pattern here.

My mini top hat measures approximately 2.5″ in diameter across the top, 4″ in diameter across the brim, and 3″ high. For this size, I have used UK Chunky/US Bulky weight yarn with a 6mm and 5mm crochet hook.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

I have used Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky yarn in Red, White, and Blue. You can substitute for other yarn weights, but it will change the size of your mini hat. You only need a small amount, roughly 10-15g or 15-25yds of each colour.

If you use a different yarn weight, you will need a recommended sized hook, and one size smaller. For example, if using Worsted weight yarn, use a 5mm and 4mm hook.

You will also a fastening to wear your fascinator. You can use a rigid plastic headband, or if you plan on wearing your hair up, you can use hair clips.

Exact gauge isn’t too important for this project, just try to keep your stitches consistent.

CROCHET UNION JACK FASCINATOR

This free crochet Union Jack fascinator pattern uses US crochet terms.

We will be working this pattern using the Waistcoat Stitch aka Knit Stitch. This will give us neat straight lines for our colour changes, ensuring the stitches stack on top of each other correctly.

Royal Wedding Celebration Gonk

Waistcoat stitches are worked the same as standard single crochet stitches, only you hook through the middle of the stitch post where the stitch forms a V shape (indicated below by Purple), rather than the standard top 2 loops (indicated below by Yellow).

When changing colours, switch on the last pull through of the stitch to complete the sc with the new colour.

Union Jack Top Hat Crochet Pattern colour changes

We will also be starting with a magic ring (mr), and making standard single crochet (sc) stitches for some sections. To shape the hat, we will also work into the back loops only of the stitch tops when we finish the top section and front loops only when we start the brim.

To help prevent your different colour yarns from twisting and tangling, place each yarn ball in different areas. One on your left-hand side, one on your right-hand side, and one in front of you. When you drop a colour, just hold you work up a little, to allow gravity to help organise your yarns.

PATTERN NOTES:

All stitches will be Waistcoat Stitches unless otherwise specified. For the written pattern, I will refer to these stitches using their colours.
R is for Red, W is for White, B is for Blue.

Each letter will represent a single waistcoat stitch unless indicated with a number before (eg. 2R OR 3W) for an increase in the same stitch (make 2 or 3 stitches of the same colour into the same stitch) or ‘dec’ for a decrease over the next 2 stitches (waistcoat sc2tog).

Instructions with x(number) indicate to repeat the same for the next (number) of stitches, eg. R x2 would mean, make a single waistcoat stitch into the next 2 stitches.

Instructions within [ ] indicate a colour change sequence to be worked all in the same stitch, making an increase.

text shown within ( ) before a round instructions are guidance notes to help simplify the pattern for that round.

When joining at the end of the round, sl st into the normal stitch top of the sc stitch.

Numbers shown in ( ) at the end of each round indicates the number of stitches you should have at the end of that round.

If you are experienced with working waistcoat stitches and colour changes, and would like to just see the plain written instructions, you can view the same top hat pattern written out for the Gonk here.

We will be crocheting around the dropped colour yarns as we work. You may find that you can accidentally catch on the carried yarn as you work a stitch, like so:

If this happens, just undo that stitch and feed the hook into the stitch again, but this time carefully guide it underneath the carried yarn.

Finish the stitch as normal and you’ll see that the little snag has been cleverly covered up and no one needs to ever know!

MINI TOP HAT PATTERN:

Work the hat in joined rounds. The ch1s at the beginning of each round do not count as stitches.
Using your standard (larger) size hook and your Red yarn, start with a magic ring,

R1.

sc x6 into mr, pull closed, sl st into the first sc to join (6)

Switch over to your smaller hook size to work the waistcoat stitches. Keep your stitches a little loose to help with working into them. You can do this by ensuring you bring the pulled through loops to the top of your work, as if it were level with a standard sc stitch.

(We will be increasing in each stitch for this round)
ch1, 2R x6, sl st to join (12)

We will add White yarn in the next round. Remember to work around the dropped yarn to carry it forward. When joining, simply pull the new colour through your last working stitch to finish the stitch, then crochet around the starting tail for a few stitches to hold it in place.

That’s your mini Union Jack top hat complete! Now you just need to decide how to wear it. You can stitch the brim onto a rigid headband, like I have done here:Crochet Union Jack Fascinator Free Pattern - A cute mini top hat fascinator, perfect for the Royal wedding celebrations! A crocheted Union Jack top hat to fasten onto a headband or hair clips.

Or, if you’re wearing your hair tied back, you can use hair clips, grips, or a hair comb to keep your mini top hat in place.

For snappy style hair clips, sew a couple of clips to the base of the brim.

For kirby grips or bobby pins, you can just pin through the hat brim into your hair, in multiple places to keep in place.

For hair combs, sew the comb onto the base of the brim on each side.

CONGRATULATIONS!
