UNION JACK OUTFIT FREE CROCHET PATTERN

Royal Wedding Celebration Gonk

Adam Gonk is joining in with the Royal Wedding celebrations. He’ll be attending the street parties in his dashing red, white, and blue outfit, complete with Union Jack hats. Bowler hat for the day, and top hat for the night!

This pattern includes instructions for the Union Jack top hat, bowler hat, and for his waistcoat.

To make a Royal Wedding Celebrations Gonk, you will need Red, White, and Blue yarn. If you want to make a separate Gonk base, you can make his underclothing and hair any colours you choose. Remember, you can use any yarn weight to make the Gonks, just keep to the same weight for each colour.

GONK BODY:

I have used a previous Gonk base for this outfit. If you would like to make a new Gonk, follow this guide for underclothing. You can use any colours you choose.

Work the main body as detailed in the original Santa Gonk pattern as follows:
R1. to R7. in your shoe colour.
R8. to R13. in your trouser colour.
R14. in your belt colour.
R15.-R19. in your shirt colour.
R20. to R30. in skin colour for the head.

To add sleeves to the arms, work R1. to R3. of the arm pieces in skin colour and change to your shirt colour for the rest of arms.
Find the position for the nose by lining up the top of the nose under the 8th round from top. Attach the arms on either side under the 10th round from top.

You can use any colour for the hair and beard, and style them any way you choose.

ROYAL WEDDING CELEBRATION GONK

As we will be working with 3 colours for these hats, this will bulk up our stitches, so we need to use a hook one size smaller than usual. You will also need your standard size hook to start and finish the hats. This will help keep to the right scale for the Gonk.

I have used Chunky weight yarn and a 6mm for my Gonk, so I will use a 6mm and 5mm hook for my hats. Adjust your hook size accordingly, eg. if you use Worsted weight yarn for your Gonk and a 5mm hook, you’ll need a 5mm and 4mm hook.
For neat lines for our colour changes, we will be working waistcoat stitches.Royal Wedding Celebration Gonk

Waistcoat stitches are worked the same as standard single crochet stitches, only you hook through the middle of the stitch post where the stitch forms a V shape (indicated below by Purple), rather than the standard top 2 loops (indicated below by Yellow).

When changing colours, switch on the last pull through of the stitch to complete the sc with the new colour.

PATTERN NOTES:

All stitches will be Waistcoat Stitches unless otherwise specified. For the written pattern, I will refer to these stitches using the colours.
R is for Red, W is for White, B is for Blue.

Each letter will represent a single waistcoat stitch unless indicated with a number before (eg. 2R OR 3W) for an increase in the same stitch (make 2 or 3 stitches of the same colour into the same stitch) or ‘dec’ for a decrease (waistcoat sc2tog) over the next 2 stitches. Instructions with x(number) indicate to repeat the same for the next (number) of stitches, eg. R x2 = make a single waistcoat stitch into the next 2 stitches.

Instructions within [ ] indicate a colour change sequence to be worked all in the same stitch, making an increase.

text shown within ( ) before a round instructions are guidance notes to help simplify the pattern for that round.

When joining at the end of the round, sl st into the normal stitch top of the sc stitch.

UNION JACK TOP HAT CROCHET PATTERN:

Royal Wedding Celebration Gonk
Work the hat in joined rounds. The ch1s at the beginning of each round do not count as stitches.
Using your standard (larger) size hook and your Red yarn, start with a magic ring,

R1.

sc x6 into mr, pull closed, sl st into the first sc to join (6)

Switch over to your smaller hook size to work the waistcoat stitches. Keep your stitches a little loose to help with working into them. You can do this by ensuring you bring the pulled through loops to the top of your work, as if it were level with a standard sc stitch.

R2.

ch1, 2R x6, sl st to join (12)

We will add White yarn in the next round. Remember to work around the dropped yarn to carry it forwards. When joining, simply pull the new colour through your last working stitch to finish the stitch, then crochet around the starting tail for a few stitches to hold it in place.

R3.

ch1, R, 3W, R x2, 3W, R x2, 3W, R x2, 3W, R, sl st to join (20)

R4.

ch1, R, *[W, B, W], R, [W, B, W], R x2,* repeat between * 3 more times ending the round with only one R, sl st to join (36)

Take a moment to weave in your Red starting tail end here, and trim off any excess White and Blue joining tail ends.
Work the next round as normal sc stitches in the back loops only of the previous round.

(Follow the colour changes of the previous round and sc in each back loop)

R18.

ch1, *sc x5, 2sc,* repeat between * 5 more times, sl st to join (42)

Cut your Red and White yarns close to your work here. Switch back over to your standard sized hook to finish off the brim.

TRIM & LAPELS:

Using Red yarn, add the trim, collar and lapels. We will be working a trim along the hem and up the bottom edges of rows, then work the lapel up the edge of rows, add a collar to the opposite side of the starting chain, work the other lapel down the edge of rows on the other side, before finishing the trim along the bottom edge, hem, and along the coat tails. We will start on the right side of the coat, it doesn’t matter which side it is, so just pick your best side to face you.

Step 1.

Hook through the hem stitch to the left of the coat tails and pull through your yarn to create a loop on hook, sl st along the hem stitches and evenly up the bottom slope of the edge of rows,

Step 2.

ch1 and turn the coat to work on the other side for the lapels, we will now work along the edge of the 7 rows up to the neckline, sc x2, 2hdc, [hdc, dc], [dc, ch2, sl st], [sl st, ch3, trc], [trc, dc],

Step 3.

dc x26 along the opposite side of the starting chain for the collar,

Step 4.

working back down the edge 7 rows, [dc, trc], [trc, ch3, sl st], [sl st, ch2, dc], [dc, hdc], 2hdc, sc x2,

Step 5.

turn the coat to work along the other side again, sl st down the edge, along the hem, along the edge of the coat tail points, ending in the same stitch you started in.

Step 6.

cut yarn and pull through the loop on hook to fasten, feed the end back through to the back and tie the starting and tail ends together to secure. Weave on ends.

Now add a White trim with the outside of the waistcoat facing you. Start at the beginning of the Red trim slip stitches, work sc stitches into the back loops of the Red stitches, going through the Blue underneath as well. Continue sc along the Red slip stitches, making 3sc in at the tips of the tail points to turn the corner. Then work sl sts along the front loops of the lapel and collar stitches. Royal Wedding Celebration Waistcoast Crochet Pattern for Gonk

Work these slip stitches by going down through the top middle of the Red stitches, to hook behind the front loops. Draw the yarn up and work a slip stitch as normal. Continue along each stitch, including along the chain stitches made at the lapels. Finish with a sl st into the first White sc made. Cut yarn and fasten off.

Royal Wedding Celebration Waistcoast Crochet Pattern for Gonk

Now work a line of surface slip stitches along the inside of the waistcoat, at base of the lapels and collar. Fasten off and weave in ends.
