CROCHET NUTCRACKER OUTFIT FREE PATTERN

I’ve created a new addition to the Christmas Gonks collection, a Nutcracker Gonk!

This Nutcracker Gonk crochet pattern includes the tall hat, elaborate coat, and instructions for the underclothing and hairstyle.

To make a Nutcracker Gonk outfit, you will need Red, Gold (or yellow), and Black yarn. I have used White and Dark Brown for his hair, and have given him Black trousers and a White shirt. Of course, you can use any colours you prefer for his hair and underclothing.

Remember, you can use any yarn weight to make your Gonks. Just ensure you keep to the same yarn weight and hook size for his outfits to keep to scale.

GONK BODY:

If you would like to make another Gonk especially for this outfit, work the main body as detailed in the original Santa Gonk pattern, changing colours as follows.

Work R1. to R7. in Black or your shoe colour.
Work R8. to R13. in Black or your chosen trouser colour.
Work R14. to R19. in White yarn for the shirt.
Work R20. to R30. in skin tone for the head.

For the arms, work R1. to R3. in skin tone and change to White for the rest of arms.

Find the position for the nose by lining up the top of the nose under the 8th round from top. Attach the arms on either side under the 10th round from top.

ADD HAIR, MOUSTACHE & BEARD:

Add hair to the head using the same technique as used for the beard. I have used White yarn, and attached around the top 3 rounds of the Gonk’s head. I have then unravelled the plies of yarn and brushed out the fibres with a wire pet brush. This creates a wild fluffy look, often found on Nutcracker figurines.

For his facial hair, I added 3 strands of Dark Brown yarn to either side of his nose for the moustache, and White yarn under his nose for the chin strip beard. I combed these out in the same way as the hair, trimmed to shape and twisted the ends of the moustache.

NUTCRACKER HAT CROCHET PATTERN:

Work the hat in joined rounds. The ch1s at the beginning of each round do not count as stitches.

Using Black yarn, start with a magic ring,

Add some Gold decorations to the hat. I made a french knot on one side of the hat, let the yarn run across the front, and made another french knot on the other side. I also added a large french knot to the top centre of the hat. You can embroider decorations, add buttons, or feathers if you wish.

Add the trim:

With the right side of the coat facing you, join your Gold yarn with a slip stitch to the bottom front corner. Slip stitch along the bottom slanted edge of the front, continue up the middle of the coat with a surface slip stitch, continue slip stitches along the top slanted edge of the same side until you reach the top neckline. Working along the opposite side of the original starting chain, make 2sc in the first st, sc x24 along the neckline, 2sc in the last st. Continue with slip stitches down the other side of the coat front, until you reach the other bottom corner.

Working the sleeves:

The skipped stitches, ch5s, and the sc stitches before and after, worked in R2. make up the armholes. For the shoulder area, we will be working a standard Cluster stitch (CL), these are made by working dc3tog (Double Crochet 3 Together) into the same stitch.

Hold the coat with the right side facing you and neckline up. Using Gold yarn, join onto the middle of the opposite side of the ch5 made in R2. (3rd ch of the 5 chs),

R1. sc in same place as join, sc x2 along opposite side of ch, sc around side of the sc post, working along the 5 skipped sts of R1. hdc, CL x3, hdc, sc around side of the sc post, sc x2 along the opposite side of ch again, sl st into first sc to join (12) Fasten off Gold yarn.

R2. Work the Red section in continuous rounds. Join Red yarn with a sc in the first st, sc in each remaining st (12)

R3.-R5. sc in each st (12 for 3 rounds)

R6. sc in each st, sl st into the first sc to level off (12) Fasten off Red yarn.

R7. Join Gold yarn with sc to the underside of the sleeve, sc in each remaining stitch, sl st into the first sc to join (12)

R8. ch1, sc in each stitch, sl st to join (12) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Repeat for the other armhole.

Add details:

You can look up pictures of Nutcracker figurines for inspiration, and decorate your Nutcracker Gonk as you like.

I have added a belt by making a Black line of surface slip stitches, along the round just above the bottom split of the coat. I then embroidered a Gold rectangle as the belt buckle.

I also added a few french knots with lines of yarn joining them across the front and the back of the coat.
