Chainmail armour – Knight doll free crochet pattern

We will be work V stitches for the armour [dc, ch1, dc in the same space].
Using Grey yarn, chain 36 and join to form a circle,

Chainmail main body

R1. ch4 and dc in same st below (counts as first V st), *skip 2 ch, V st in next ch*, repeat between * 10 more times, sl st into 3rd ch of beginning ch4 to join (total of 12 V stitches made)
R2. sl st into middle of first V st, ch4 and dc same sp below (counts as first V st), V st in the middle of each V st along, sl st into 3rd ch of beginning ch4 to join (total of 12 V stitches made) R3.-R4. Repeat R2. (total of 12 V stitches made for 2 more rounds)
R5. sc evenly going around each middle ch1 sp and top of each dc st along, sl st into first sc to join and fasten off. (36 sc stitches).

Chainmail hood

Join yarn to any skipped ch2 sp along the opposite side of the previous starting chain,
R1. ch4 and dc in same sp below (counts as first V st), ch3 and skip the next ch2 sp, V st in the next 6 ch2 sps, ch3 and skip the next ch2 sp, V st in the next ch2 sp, turn, leaving the last 2 ch2 sps unworked (total of  V st, ch3, 6 x V st, ch3, V st made)
R2. ch2 (counts as hdc st), V st in middle of first V st below, V st in the 2nd ch of ch3, dc in the middle of the next V st, V st in middle of the next 4 V sts, dc in the middle of the next V st, V st in the 2nd ch of ch3, V st in the middle of the last V st, hdc in the 3rd ch of the previous ch4 at the edge, turn (total of hdc, 2 x V st, dc, 4 x V st, dc, 2 x V st, hdc made)
R3. ch2 (counts as hdc st), V st in middle of next 2 V sts, skip the dc st, V st in middle of the next 4 V sts, skip the dc st, V st in middle of next 2 V sts, hdc in top of previous ch2, turn (total of hdc, 8 x V st, hdc made)
R4. ch2 (counts as hdc st), V st in middle of next 3 V sts, dc2tog (going into the middle of the next 2 V sts), V st in middle of the next 3 V sts, hdc in top of previous ch2, turn (total of hdc, 3 x V st, dc2tog, 3 x V st, hdc made)
R5. ch2 (counts as hdc st), V st in middle of next 2 V sts, dc3tog (going into the middle of next V st, top of dc2tog, and next V st), V st in middle of the next 2 V sts, hdc in top of previous ch2, fasten off leaving a long tail (total of hdc, 2 x V st, dc3tog, 2 x V st, hdc made)  Fold the corners of the last row together and use your yarn needle and tail end to join the top of the hood, by whip stitching from front edge towards middle of row to form the back of hood. Weave in ends.

Chainmail arms 

The ch3 and skipped ch2 sp made in the first row of the hood makes the armholes.
Join yarn to the opposite side of the chain used to make the V st you can see in the middle of bottom edge of the armhole,
R1. ch4 and dc in same ch st below (counts as first V st), V st in the next ch2 sp, working around the top of the armhole, V st in the 2 ch1 spaces either side of the V st below (these are the skipped ch sts of the ch3 made on the first row of the hood), V st in the ch2 sp to the right of the starting V st along bottom edge, sl st into 3rd ch of starting ch4 to join (total of 5 V stitches made)
R2.-R3. sl st into middle of first V st, ch4 and dc same sp below (counts as first V st), V st in the middle of each V st around, sl st into 3rd ch of beginning ch4 to join (total of 5 V stitches made for 2 rounds)
R4. sc evenly going around each middle ch1 sp and top of each dc st along, sl st into first sc to join and fasten off. (15 sc stitches)  Repeat for the other armhole and weave in ends.

Vest – Knight Gonk free crochet pattern

You can choose any colour for your vest, chain 22,

Vest front

Vest shoulder strap

R9. ch1, skip the first st, sc in the next 2 st, turn, leaving the rest row unworked (2)
R10.- R16. ch1, sc x2, turn (2 for 7 rows)
Fasten off and rejoin to last st of other end of row R8., repeat R9.-R16. for the other strap, do not fasten off after the second strap, continue on to back,

Vest back

R17. ch1, sc x2, ch11, sc x2 along the other strap to join, turn (15)
R18. ch2, sc in 2nd ch from hook (first ch remains as the turning ch and does not count), sc x15, turn (16)
R19. ch2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc x16 , turn (17)
R20. ch2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc x17, turn (18)
R21. ch2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc x18, turn (19)
R22. ch2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc x19, turn (20)
R23. ch2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc x20, turn (21)
R24. ch1, sc in each st, turn (21)
R25. ch1, sc in each st, turn (21)
R26. ch1, sc in each st (21) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Fold at the shoulders and line up the bottom hem. Use your yarn needle and a short length of yarn to join either side by simply tacking 3 rows up from the bottom, leaving the bottom sides open and a large armhole. Add a sword holster (scabbard) by joining your yarn on the 3rd row up and after the 4th st in from edge (at the left corner of the front of vest). ch3 and cut yarn leaving a tail, pull the tail through to secure and use your yarn needle to stitch your tail end 3 rows up diagonally. Secure and weave in ends.

Sword – Knight Gonk free crochet pattern

Sword handle

Sword Free Crochet PatternI have used a gold colour, you can choose any colour for your handle.
Work into the back bumps of chains for the handle piece for a neat, even finish. chain 7, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc x2, ch3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, continue sc x3 along the original ch, cut yarn and pull through the last loop, use your yarn needle to thread the tail end through the first sc st and back into the last loop for a neat finish. Secure and weave in end.

Blade

Using Grey yarn, chain 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st x3, [sl st, sc, sl st] in the last ch, work back up the opposite side of starting chain, sl st x4, cut yarn leaving a tail, pull end through the last loop and use your yarn needle to the blade to the middle of the handle. Slide into the holster (scabbard) on your vest.

Shield – knight Gonk free crochet pattern

Using Grey yarn, chain 10,

Shield back

Shield Free Crochet PatternR1. sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each remaining st, turn (9)
R2. ch1(starting turning ch does not count as a st here on), sc in each st, turn (9)
R3.-R8. Repeat R2. (9 for 6 rounds)
R9. ch1, skip the first st, sc in each remaining st, turn (8)
R10. ch1, skip the first st, sc in each remaining st, turn (7)
R11. ch1, skip the first st, sc in each remaining st, turn (6)
R12. ch1, skip the first st, sc in each remaining st, turn (5)
R13. ch1, skip the first st, sc in each remaining st, turn (4)
R14. ch1, skip the first st, sc in each remaining st, (3)
R15. ch1, sc evenly around the edge of shield making 2sc in the bottom corners (narrow end) and 3sc in the top corners (wide end) (42 sc stitches) Fasten off and weave in ends.

Shield front

Match your shield design to your vest using the same colours, chain 8,
R1. sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each remaining st, turn (7)
R2. ch1(starting turning ch does not count as a st here on), sc in each st, turn (7)
R3.-R7. Repeat R2. (7 for 5 rounds)
R8. ch1, skip the first st, sc in each remaining st, turn (6)
R9. ch1, skip the first st, sc in each remaining st, turn (5)
R10. ch1, skip the first st, sc in each remaining st, turn (4)
R11. ch1, skip the first st, sc in each remaining st, (3)
R12. ch1, sc evenly around the edge making 2sc in the bottom corners (narrow end) and 3sc in the top corners (wide end) (34 sc stitches)
Fasten off leaving a long tail for joining. Embroider your chosen design on to the front piece to match your vest.
Use your yarn needle and tail end to join the front piece onto the centre of the back piece using a running stitch along the edge stitches. Secure and weave in end.

Shield handle

Knight Gonk Free Crochet PatternJoin Grey yarn to the back of shield, around the second stitch post in from the edge of the row half way down, ch4 and sl st around the second post in from the other edge of the same row. Fasten off and weave in. Slide your Gonk’s arm down through the handle to hold the shield.
